Hello all!

I’m looking to add a new horsey member to the family and quite keen on a youngster to bring on myself. I’d ideally want a 14.2hh.
I’ve found a filly I really like, she has just turned 2 and is currently 13hh. Parents were 14.1hh (dam) and 15hh (sire). She is an Arab x Connie.
Do you think it’s realistic to expect her to make 14.1hh/14.2hh?

Thanks in advance!

I think the filly you are interested in might end up smaller. My gelding was 14hh when I got him. He was almost exactly 2 years old. He is now 8 and is a smidge under 15hh. His half sister (mother 14.3, sire 14.2) is 16 months old and 13.3.

Some of my NF's heights, Benji was 13.1hh as yearling-made 14.2hh, Flicka was just under 13.2hh-made 14.1hh, Gus 13hh-made 14.1hh, Sky 12.3/13hh-made 13.2hh. I have a 3yo who was 13hh as yearling, he's about 13.3hh now and string test predicts 14.1hh.

Mine went on the yearling height plus 2hh, two year old height plus one 1hh, both ended up around 14.2

this is always a very good rough guide, but as TP said, when you want them to grow they don't and when you do they don't. If 14.2hh is important to you I'd be looking for something bigger. I had a 2yr old grow a whole inch by the time he was 6, and another one grow about 6inches.

You could try string testing which is usually fairly accurate.

Thank you, I’m thinking the same.
Mad how there can be such a difference!

Mine was 12hh last year at just over a year. Now 13hh at 2 years. Predicted 14/14.2hh. String test certainly says he has a few more inches to go so who knows! I’ll be happy with 14hh…

It might happen but I wouldn't bank on it. First filly foal I bred was out of a 14hh mare of unknown breeding. Sire was 16hhs. She was 13.3 at 2 and a smidge over 14hhs when full grown. The next foal the mare had was by a 15.3 anglo-arab and he made 16hhs. The same mare had a foal that was 10hhs at birth but only made about 14.2.

Actually, I measured my filly yesterday and she is now 14hh, not 13.3 and also realised she is only 14 months, not 16.
