Those of you on full livery, meaning including exercise/schooling - what are the reasons for you to have your horses full livery (time, living too far away from yard, trainer etc) and how often do you see your horse?

I used to have mine on full livery, including exercise, before I met my husband. I work as cabin crew, so am away for a few days at a time, so she was looked after and kept fit so that I could event. Every day that I was home (often three days a week) I would see her and ride, even mucking out. When I met my husband and we moved her home we built our own yard and got more equines. Sometimes I still dream of full livery!

I have one of mine on full livery as he is a stallion and it is much easier for me for them to do him and his day to day schooling he is far to talented a horse for me to ride (His jump is far to much for this old lady to sit!!). I do however take him to and from his show jumping/dressage events. I see him daily when doing my other horses.

As I've somehow managed to end up with 5 (!) so one of them is on full livery as I only have time before work to exercise 1 or 2. I see (and do extras for) all of them twice a day morning and night even though the others are on part livery. The others go on and off "full livery" as I need it, but for the babies that has meant things like giving me some help with in-hand training and during the horsebox training period - feeding them on the horsebox to make it something they wanted to go on. The yard did this so that they could have their dinner at the usual time and so I wasn't having to try and do this in the dark. My lovely old ex-brood mare is coming back into work very slowly, and at the moment is having a lovely time being led when the one that is on full livery is being ridden out.

There could possibly be a period of a few years (my horses range in ages from 18 months to 20) when I've got 4 or 5 in work :-o so I shall be getting up even earlier and possibly having to have 2 on full livery! I did used to run my own yard with an afternoon groom and whilst still a huge commitment, livery is much better for us. If I could ever give up work (not likely is it with 5!!) I would do more of the exercise myself.

I used to be on full livery but my mare never settled on the yard as it was a busy riding school & only offered full or grass livery. So moved her to a quieter yard that was a farm & she was so much happier. I had horses on full livery because of work commitments & because l could afford to pay the £80 livery costs. However, when l got a mortgage & my children came along my circumstances changed so needed to prioritize my outgoings. l will spend money on whatever my animals require but l've no regrets moving yards. The riding school now charges £50 for grass livery in winter & charge extra for schooling & excerising your horse so l'd rather no pay & either ride myself or ask a knowledgeable riding friend to ride for me when l couldn't

My boy went onto full livery when I was working silly hours and away sometimes so needed to know he was looked after whatever I was doing. Since then I've retired and .... He's still on full livery ....! Total extravagance tbh, but now I have more time on my hands we go away for weekends or longer at short notice and i have other hobbies and interests so it's lovely to think of my pony being cared for in a regular routine whether I'm there or not. If I go away for more than a couple of days I get the yard to exercise him for me. Expensive but I love it and won't change things unless I have to.
