Full Livery

Here, here FMM ... Well said! I too have a very close bond with my horse. The time I have is spent with her, not running up and down with a wheelbarrow

If I could find a good yard that I trusted and could afford it easily I would have mine on full livery in a flash. I've spent a lifetime mucking out and would rather not to have to do it any more.

Having my own business and a new baby I wouldn't have time to do everything with H if she wasn't on full livery - When it comes down to it.. I'd rather spend time WITH my horse rather than DOING THINGS for my horse - When time is limited you've just got to make the most of things - and I feel lucky that I am in a position where I can afford this - I've done the xxx years on DIY with early mornings and freezing fingers!

Well said indeed.

I work on a full livery yard of 13 horses and there is a wide variety of owners. Some we do never see for weeks at a time and dont have a clue how to put a rug on (not joking!) but these are the ones that give us the least hassel making our life easier! There are two liveries, both vets who are down at the crack of dawn nearly everyday to ride and it is only the restrictions of their job which means they use full livery. Others are owned/ridden by school kids who dont have the time or opportunity to come down during the week but usually spend the entire weekend down the yard.

All are extremely well looked after, unfortunatley only get morning turn out at the moment but always have hayledge when stabled. I do not believe that any of our liveries are 'abusing' the fact they can afford full livery, its just how it fits in with their lifestyle. I used to be on full livery whilst at school, still used to go down pretty much every day but then the price rose and we couldnt afford it, plus im not in school now so there was no real need. Was nice while it lasted and I wouldnt say being on DIY has had much effect on our 'bonding', the fact that im now shovelling his poo doesnt change much!

Well said !
I run a livery yard, some full, some part and some diy, which means that my horses are on full livery and also diy! I choose to employ staff to muck out for me so that I can spend quality time with my horses because I like the hands on, because I want to pull the main or I want to sit in the corner of the stable for half an hour with a pocket full of nuts. I have a great need to see my horses every day which is why I wont go away on holiday - but this is my need, not theirs.

People are so quick to judge, but until you have walked a mile in someone elses shoes, you dont have a qualified opinion. People do what people do for their own reasons following their own path in life - who are we to judge?

Hmmmm... well i have my two on DIY because i do feel thats how i bond best with them. The other reason is i like nothing better after a sh*t day at work ( and there are many!) going to the farm to see my horses. I have never understood the concept of having horses, paying someone else ALOT of money to do them and only seeing them once every month or so. ( not that im saying all those who are on full livery only see them once a month. ) However i do not call them or think any less of them for having their horses on full livery. I too may one day have to think about livery for my boys if for instance i have children

as i would rather do that than sell them.

I myself do not agree with owners not turning up for months, but that is none of my business,HOWEVER at least they have the sense to put neds on full livery, could you imagine the mess if they were diy???
blush.gif
at least on full livery the horse is well looked after!!There are alot of people out there that do own horses just to say to their mates "i've got a horse" known alot of them!!!

Hear hear!

I've had to put mine on full livery at least until February, due to work commitments etc - I still go up to see them as much as possible but it is bloody lovely to take advantage of not having to do anything other than ride on a work night! When I have more time, eg weekends, I do as much as possible with them, simply because I enjoy spending time at the yard. But having always done absolutely everything for my ponies/horses on my own since a young age, plus a good few years working on event yards, it is so nice to be able to afford to have my horses on full livery and take a bit of a break from the all the chores. I have not noticed the slightest difference in the 'bond' between me and my boys, if anything we get on better, lol. The routine that they are in now suits them down to a tea and I would never be able to give them that in my current situation.

I so agree!
The way to bond with your horse is not to muck him out but to know his itchy bits, to ride and enjoy him and to occasionally just talk to him whether by just stroking or being friendly.
A horse couldn't care less who grooms it/mucks it out etc, and I could shake those holier than thou types who like to boast they do "everything" themselves..
We've all done it, so what? I would far rather pay someone to muck out than do it myself, I have better things to do...

well said!

i agree with full liver for people with reasons for putting their horse on full livers, like young children, work, illnesses, lack of time etc.

i just dont agree with some people. like poeple who put their horses on full livery just because they can afford it., or because they cant be bothered to go down every day.

some people rely on full livery to be able to fulfil their dream of owning a horse, but some people abuse it.

[/ QUOTE ] That isn't abusing it, its just having a different lifestyle to you! what is the big deal if the horse is well cared for, with a good routine and a caring owner? Being there less frequently than every day doesn't make someone a bad owner unless you anthropomorphise the horse like its a child!

I would rather spend my time grooming, riding and cuddling, than filling haynets, water buckets and mucking out. However I don't work and generally am well enough to do the care myself. I'd love someone to do my stable each day though, just because I find it a bore. If that makes a job for someone then fine.

As long as a horse is fed watered and looked after, it really doesnt care who does it, horses dont love you like a dog does, one thing i have noticed especially is people that dont have children (usually) treat their horses as their babies! My horses are well looked after by myself, but i am aware they are horses not my children, and if i could afford it, yes i could quite easily handle full livery!

I have owned horses for over a decade and they have always been kept at full livery because I work very long hours. That said though, I go up at least 6 days a week, sometimes 7 to see my pony and ride. I go up for the dentist and the farrier and I skip out her stable every time I go up if necessary. I also sweep up any mess we make on the yard and pick up all droppings (including other horses' in the school because I like it to be tidy).

There is no way I could be called lazy. I work anything between 10 - 15 hour days (with a break in the middle to go to the yard). I can't work much harder or I make myself ill.

My pony is always pleased to see me and whickers at me as soon as I arrive at the yard. If it weren't for full livery I couldn't possibly have a horse.

In saying that I also know people who have their horses on full livery and do not bother going to see or ride it from one month to the next and that makes me sad. What is the point, the horse is being wasted.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well I shouldn't worry about that because the horse doesn't. I have loads of boarders who don't come to see their horses for months on end. Their horses are perfectly happy with their life here on my farm.

Exactly, plus do you know the ins and outs of this liveries life? I was taken into hospital, and won't be able to ride until February. My horse is on full livery, and to some people it will seem as if I don't bother with him. Plus, when I go to the yard I am often one of the only people there.

I'm really curious about this "bond" business . . . what exactly do people mean when they say this? That the horse whickers when it sees you? Sure that's not cupboard love?;) Does it mean the horse competes more successfully? Does what one wants more readily? Behaves in a more relaxed, content fashion?

DIY is almost unheard of in many parts of the world and I've got to tell you I don't see any significant difference in how owners feel about their horses or how their horses perform for them, however you want to judge that. Horses don't, as a rule, seem to jump higher, behave better (or worse) or otherwise show much measurable difference if they are looked after by their owners or by other people, so long as their needs are met and they are handled and ridden correctly. In fact, IN SOME CASES (zipping up my flame suit) I'd say horses' lives improve under full, experienced care.

I'd be interested to know if people who look after their own horses have better behaved, better adjusted, better performing (again, however one wants to judge), and generally "happier athletes" (to borrow from the FEI) or if, indeed it makes much difference at all. In fact I know lots of people who don't even OWN the horses they ride (myself included) and yet have great relationships with them, sometimes even more effective and productive (and enjoyable) than the interactions the horses have with the people who look after them everyday. In fact one MIGHT argue a horse on full livery in a yard with very experienced management and instruction is actually better off, especially if the owner is not extremely experienced, as there is always very able help at hand.

Don't get me wrong, DIY seems like a great economy and I agree looking after horses can give one a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction. (I personally loved feeding, liked mucking well enough, could have lived without turning out, especially 20+ horses in a Canadian winter.) And it certainly does let someone get to know his/her horse well (although I've certainly met people who look after their horse every day and yet seem to know little about how it actually ticks), which can be a great benefit. But to think horses somehow "appreciate" who mucks its stall and change their behaviour accordingly . . . well, I haven't seen much evidence of that.

If someone wants to do DIY for their own sake then that's super. If someone feels their horse (and their life) is better served by having more help, then that's great too. So long as the horse is getting the best possible care and showing that in its health and deportment.

I do DIY because I believe all horse owners who put their horses on full livery are all fat, ugly, uncaring and smelly.
grin.gif

OR it could be because I have youngsters which I want to handle myself....to be certain that they have the right manners etc without having to worry that someone will damage them...or they'll damage someone. Would you all not think it strange if someone put foals and weanlings etc on full livery with you? And I've found people are very frightened and uncertain what to do with foals to 4year olds. Besides, I like mine living out, but fed, hayed, haylaged, rugs changed, feet picked out, trough cleaned in the field, etc....and NO livery yard would do full field livery.

I agree with you 100%. I mentioned in another thread a while ago that i think there is much more snobbery on this forum against people on full livery than there is against those on DIY.

I have my horse on full livery because i like someone being on site to keep an eye on him. I cant be at the stables 18 hours a day - the staff are. If he gets ill or injured, the chances are high that they'll know almost immediatly.

I spend lots of time with Jack precisely because i dont have to spend it mucking out, filling haynets etc and frankly, i dont think he cares who shovels his poo out and i dont think he bonds with them because of it. He's in the care of very professional horse people who know their jobs, who are onsite 18 hours a day with vets and farriers onhand if there are any problems. IMO thats the best care i can offer him.

lmao???

Oooh Shilasdair you do like to live dangerously!
I keep my horse at my friend's house so its like DIY livery and I wouldn't really want any thing else. I love mucking out, poo-picking etc etc but that's probably because for the first 30 years of my life I would have done anything quite literally anything to have my own horse. Now I have that pleasure, I wouldn't want anyone to take that away from me, and that includes all the aspects of horse care.
The novelty of doing this hasn't worn off after 10 years of being a horse owner.
However - if - due to work/kids/health the choice was full livery or no horse then obviously I would chose full livery (if I could afford it!)

Henryhorn too, I believe.

Tyler is on Full Livery due to my choice fo career. I am currently completing a B.Sc Adult Nursing whihc can mean 3 days getting up at 0530 to start at 0700, not getting back until 0730 then having a couple of days off. From the point of a structured routine for him, I feel he has to be on Full Livery. Getting up at 0530 to feed and turn him out after a 12 hour shift isnt appealing!!!

I still feel that we have a great bond and he is more than happy.

I can understand why some people prefer DIY, but for now (and the forseeable future) Full Livery is on the cards for Tyler

Enfys/Tia - I'd happily send you my three...but the commute might be a bit much for me. Besides I wanted them handled PROPERLY....not by Canadian cowgirls

well said! and that's coming from a DIY'er!! surely the most important thing is that the needs of the horse are being met?? a horse does'nt care who mucks it out. the bonding thing maybe an "issue" to some people , but a normal well mannered horse, should go well for any competent rider, and TBH some horses would be far better in full livery with a regular routine.
if i only had the one horse i would seriously consider it, but having three makes it unaffordable, i do however, pay for full services when i go on holiday etc. personally DIY works for me, i live 10 mins from yard and work 2mins away, but if i had a high powered job, and had to commute no way could i fit the horses in.....
i can see why people want the stability of having their own horse rather than having a lesson at a riding school, not so much about bonding, but about freedom, you can hack where and when you want and are not restricted on pace!!
people who put their horses on full livery are being responsible, much rather that than leaving the poor thing dumped in a feild with inadequate care - like some DIY's i could mention.....
at the end of the day, i cannot for the life of me see why some people can't just mind their own business, and enjoy there own horses, and leave others to enoy theirs.

You do what too (although I'm almost too frightened to ask)?

Hmmmm, different topic i think, lol!!!!Although i was thinking of the bus, lord knows were your mind is at the mo

pmsl!!

I fully appreciate having a horse on full livery, I used to work at a racing/hunting/breaking yard that only did full livery, and if i had my own yard i would only offer full livery, for the simple reason of routine, and its the only way to make any money!

however I keep mine at a friends place on DIY, they live out all year and im not up at the same time every day, they dont mind, they love being out!

I could have them on full livery if i wanted, but I want them living out so am not prepared to pay those prices for a horse that isnt coming in LOL.

I say do whatever suits you!

Totally agree, I am at boarding school and having my horse on DIY is ridiculous and unfari on my mum. My mum is fantastic but is scared of horses. She has done DIY for me doing everything for my pony, and she hated it but did it so I could keep my pony. Now we can aford full livery t seems the best thing to do.
I can't do my horse every day as I am boarding at school and can only ride sundays and most saturdays in the term time. This doesn't make me a bad owener or less caring, i miss him but I don't miss the mucking out.

I haven't read the whole post as I don't have time but here are my views...

I had never even HEARD of DIY livery until I came here and I thought it was rather hysterical...until I found out the price of full

Even when I have run yards we have ALWAYS had our men to muck out, just how it is done in Spain. You see, people have LIVES and there is nothing wrong with that (unless you live in the UK then you should treat your horse like a person, buy it a stocking, oh and don't call it *it*, pander to his/her every need and put horse before OH/children/all other human beings).

Why people feel smug because they get up at stupid o'clock to muck out before going to work is beyond me!
