Those who loan out horses - how often do you visit your horse?

same with loanees - how often do they owners rock up?

In the 3 years I had my ex loan horse, owner only came up to see her once, because she booked the vet for jabs in the middle of the week in the middle of the day and I couldn't be there so owner said that she'll go up to meet vet. That's the only time she came to see her, and she only live 20min away

I loan a horse and while I've only had him 4 months, his owner has never been to visit and is rarely in touch. I've said he can visit any time but he doesn't seem bothered and go be honest, it suits me. I feel like he trusts me and knows I'm taking good care of him.

I have a loan pony. Had her for 8 months now. Owners came about 3 times in that time, but I do have them on Facebook so they see lots of pictures and updates and I message them regularly (have today actually) to keep them in the loop. They say they trust me 100% so do't feel the need to visit often.

I've had several loans and in all cases the owners never visited - one was a charity where I was backing a mare for them and they never even home checked, another was a mare who I needed to send back because I was moving out of the area and they informed me that they had moved from Scotland to England some months earlier and couldn't take her back. Bizarre!

Im shocked owners just dont visit??

i know life takes over but as they still own the horse i would have thought they cared a little more to visit?

Mine is on loan - i will be visiting to make sure shes settled in properly, and then every few months - not enough to step on toes at all as they need to be left alone to get used to each other, but still my horse and a duty to check all is well.

Im really shocked...

We've had a pony on loan for my daughter since December.. In the beginning the owner came weekly, then as we've got busier with shows and PC stuff prob every other week..

As I've got to know the owner better I'm come to realise she's not checking up on the care the pony is getting, she just genuinely loves and misses the pony !

did you think weekly was too much?

i couldnt do that i think thats complete toe-stepping from the owner?

I was in the other boat - i had a pony on loan, and the owners came 4 times in the first week... sent the pony back as it was too much....hence im careful...but its still my horse and yes i miss her [ not that much as ive packed up and sold all my horse gear... lol]

Had a horse on loan who needed surgery for an injury he got before arriving (splint that we'd thought had healed but actually required surgery for removal) and they lived over two hours away, never visited once, didn't vet yard either but only because they'd gotten a shed load of references.

They didn't keep in contact but would reply when I sent them pictures of his progress and I sent them a lovely Xmas card with the horses picture on it :)

We have one of our horses out on permanent loan to friends (daughter outgrown her) although she is only 15 mins away we do not go very often, because my daughter comes away in tears at leaving her old pony behind, and because our horse is in a wonderful 5* home. I know that if we had loaned her to 'strangers' this would not be the case and I know I would want to visit at least once a month to make sure that she was being cared for in the way I want. I wish we could have kept her with us but financially it wasn't viable and I know that where she is now she is loved as one of the family and will live out her days in peace and happiness.

I had a horse on full loan a few years ago. I had advertised on gumtree looking a full (but short term) loan, got a response, went to see horse, verbally agreed with owner, picked him up a few weeks later. Had him 3 months, owner came to visit a week before he was due to go back, having thought the whole time that he was at a yard about 30 miles away from where I was..... she was lucky I was so honest and looked after him so well! Anyway my point is, I would have happily welcomed her at any time - as a loanee, it is unreasonable to dictate when owner can visit, aside from working hours and other regular commitments.

Don't judge too quickly ;0)

I've seen my horse twice this year. I know he's in capable hands and the reason I put him out on loan were because of time (a relationship breakdown which resulted in me having less time)
his loaner updates me with photos and competition results all the time, I've no need to check up on her or the horse :0)

I've only had my boy on loan for five months so his owner has visited a couple of times so far. She is quite a distance from us though so I doubt it would be practical for her to turn up every week!
To be honest I would have no problem if she did, even without telling me - there's a footpath at the front of the field so he's easily viewable. I believe I'm caring for him to the best of my ability and within our contract so I'd be totally happy with unannounced visits, let alone planned ones every week. He's her horse so she has the right to see him whenever I can arrange to be free to meet her. Obviously if an owner started turning up unannounced on private land or insisting on visiting at times I couldn't arrange, then it would become an issue.
It probably also helps that I absolutely adore "my" boy and can't help taking hundreds of photos of him each week and plastering them all over my Facebook! :D

With my first horse owners never visited whilst I had him on loan. My second loan horse her owner checked the livery yards out and also came to see her a few times but some of that was when I booked him for lessons as he was a freelance instructor. He came to say goodbye to her before she was PTS and also offered to hold her if I wanted him too while it was being done.

I've now got a horse from WHW which is a loan, they check him twice a year xx

We've had my boy for six years now, he was actually loaned to my mums friend for a few months before that who is very nervous and was scared of him so we took him over.

His owner has been to see him once during that time, she has never met me, I don't think she has met my mum or sister either (she contacted the friend when she came - although knew we had taken the loan over). She isn't a friend of the friend either, it was a loan found on gumtree I think.

It suits us fine, we all say we find it weird to think that he isn't technically our horse but we treat him as if he is. And to be honest he's in much better condition & much fitter than he was when he arrived.

Thanks for the replies :)

Yes I do agree with te whole "owners horse can visit whenever etc" but I do think bein reasonable about visiting hours/times

I struggle to find a day when I can see owner and horse so I'm happy to just see horse as i miss her (e.g I was working for 11 day straight ) so my time is limited. I'm on fb so nice to keep in touch that way too.

Last thing I want to be is over bearing and visiting asking or being annoying so finding the balance is what I'm looking for really! I'm not going to check up its just I genuinely miss my horse! :)

My horse has been out on loan for nearly two weeks and I'm desperately missing him! Want to leave it a while before a visit so they don't think I'm interfering, but I miss him!!

When our pony was out on loan we saw her frequently at shows and as she was only a few miles away also drove past a lot (whether I was going that way or not!). In her second loan home she got injured (not the loanees fault) and I visited daily until I could bring her back home.
We had a WHW pony and apart from 3 monthly visits from the field officer her old owners visited every couple of years and we exchanged cards at Christmas. They kept in touch throughout the 15 odd years we had her.

While my shire was on loan for best part of 2yrs (bare in mind i put him out on loan because of an awkward pregnancy then oh wrote car off and didnt get another one!) im ashamed to say i only visited him twice and he only moved 20mins away but i did trust his loaner 100% she was amazing with him and loved him so much, more than i do, hes a pain in the arse tbh and i didnt want to tread on her toes incase she sent him back! Lol but she rang and sent me lots of pics on a regular basis and have her on fb

As a child(way before mobiles and social media) we had three loan ponies whose (all different) owners never bothered to visit atall and over time moved house/changed numbers etc and totally lost contact with, and one of them we wanted to buy aswell so daft owner lost out there! But we happily gave all of the ponies a loving home till the end anyway

Owner never visited only contact we had was when I emailed them updates. In the end pony was given to me, though the amount of vet bills I've paid within the first yr ex owner certainly timed it right.

Interesting replies :)

I am visiting in the next week as she's been gone 3 weeks , then every few months

Last thing I want is her back (I can afford her and time) but she needs a job to do and my mind set for competing is gone!

Any other replies welcome ....!

the kids first pony has been on loan for 3 yrs, we went very regularly for the first 3months and over time it has become less regular, the loanee was recommended by my vet and farrier who have both known and worked for her for over 20yrs, she owns the yard so her full history was easy to trace with horses, one of the vets i know lives opposite the yard and treats all the horses for routine stuff, we can turn up when we like, i have no concerns re the ponies welfare, when the pony was ill due to her copd combined with an asthma attack i received a call so i was told. i have no concerns they own 3 andalusian stallions that are used to supply semen around the world and nothing on the yard wants for anything.

i can honestly say i do not feel the need to keep turning up in person to check on things-if i had felt like that the pony would not have left my care

We have one out on loan to a fabulous home. I trust the loanees and am only visiting once every 3 months or so.

We loan a pony and owners are in regular contact. They don't interfere but are happy to help. Perfect! It is always nice to see them.

I loaned one for me for 2 years and the owner only visited twice. I didn't mind though I thought it odd but clearly she trusted me. In fact when she needed him sold I found the perfect buyer for him and she was very grateful.

One of ours we've loaned for about a year and her owners followed me to my yard when I picked her up and came for a visit a month later to see how she was settling in but I've not seen them since. I do have them on Facebook and post a lot of photos of all our horses so they see how she's doing regularly via there.

Been both, when I have loaned my horses out I visited at least once a month if not fortnightly. The horse I recently loaned the owner didn't check the yard, about a month after he came visited for literally 10 minutes and then we never saw her again until I went to hers to hand over the money to buy him 6 months later and has never visited since.

One of my horses has been loaned to a local riding school that specialises in side saddle for coming up 3 years now. When he first went we used to visit quite regularly, to check he was settling in, to make sure he looked happy, and because we missed him. We have always been told we were welcome to visit whenever we wanted, and could still ride him, when he wasn't being used in a lesson etc. we have been up and watched him compete in area competitions, and also have a small amount of F/B contact. We don't go as regularly now, partly due to time and having other horses that need looking after/riding etc, and at one point I didn't want to appear as if I was checking up all the time, but also whenever we did go up (always unannounced) everything was always pretty constant anyway, if he was in had a full net, water and a good bed, or he was out grazing with a few selected friends. This is actually the longest we have gone without seeing him, which is 8 months and that has been due to a yard move and having to completely renovate my parents home before they could move back in.

Do you all go up unannounced ?

I've always been told by loaners when visiting therefore I do the same. I trust my loaner else they wouldn't have my horse :)
