I've possibly been offered a full loan on a horse Ive been riding for someone. I'm not sure if I will be yet-theres no rush for a decision. Ive never fully loaned before and just like to know how much you all pay for your livery(DIY),hay and staw per week (this is all he has). Am I right in thinking that when you loan you just pay for everything for the horse or does it vary. Havnt spoke to owner about it properly but just wanted any advice before i do. thanks :D

Hi, generally when you take on a loan horse, you pay for everything including insurance, farrier, teeth, vets fees etc. You need to make sure you have a written agreement that is agreed and signed by you and the owner beforehand spelling out exactly what happens in every situation. Sounds awful but really is essential

thanks, yeh i think i just need to speak to her to find out all the details-I just hope i can afford it cause ive grown quite attached to him. Going to have to persuade my OH that its a good idea too, saying that i'd be the one paying so he has no choice :p  x

If you have a look on the BHS website, there's a sample loan agreement, it would give you some idea of what is involved :).

Some owners will want things like copies of utility bills, etc., to prove that you are who you say you are, plus references from vet/farrier (though if one didn't already have a horse, why on earth would one have a farrier lol).

Even if the owner is a friend, get everything in writing and agreed, including a clause in case there is the possibility of buying at the end of the loan.

Hi

I pay for livery and then any extras, the dentist, rugs, and thing she may generally need. Ive very lucky and dont pay for her insurance, vet bills, shoeing.:D :D :D

You need to plan to pay for everthing I'm afraid. The owner may want to continue her insurance and have you pay her the cost of it rather than change insurance companies. but other than that all costs would normally be yours.

Depending on your area this could be as much as £500 a month. Obviously the best person to ask is the currentnowner but don't forget to factor in vaccinations, shoeing, denitst etc on a regular basis. Also Rug cleaning and repairs. Saddler. Right down to competition entry budget and petrol to get to and from the yard each day.

It looks scary - but the better you plan and budget now the easier it will be. Don't forget to offset what you might currently spend on him now!

Yes most full loans are just like you have bought the horse, you will be responsible for every cost- unless your very lucky like myself! My real owner still pays vets bills and Livery charges although she has not seen the horse in over 5 years!

General rule though you pay- Would you keep him at the same yard? If so just ask for charges there.
Then of course there is shoes/trimming, wormers insurance- most loanee's have to have the horse insured so that if something was to happen the owner is not left with huge bills or nothing should the loaner back out!

Ask around your local area, prices vary so much from place to place.

Good luck with it all though- hope it works out really well for you x
