So as you know we have benji on full loan, haven't had a horse on full loan for a couple years and can't remember what I did. But do I need to check with the owner before I change his feed/ put him on a balancer currently just on chaff, get his saddle re flocked, getting physio you know things like that. Thanks

Worth checking with the owner, they’ll be able to give you some insight on who they use/trust and might have opinions on feed or experience in what doesn’t work for said horse. No harm in asking them first.

If you didn't agree these sorts of details upfront, maybe send them a message now asking which things they want to be involved in making decisions on. I have loaned out horses previously and on the whole I would rather someone asks than not.

I would check with feed Just incase they have any allergies or something
If it’s their saddle I would definitely check before doing anything with it
Physio you wouldn’t need permission just usually I always get the same girl to do my horses because she knows them and they might want to see a copy of the report to see how horse is doing

I had. Horse on loan and there were no restrictions on what she was fed but the owner wanted her farrier to carry on as he had been doing her since she was born, 18 years, I provided my own saddle and bridle although I borrowed the owners saddle to start with so I could ride straight away, once my saddle had been altered to fit I gave owner her saddle back. I was told to treat her as my own so I made excisions about feed etc . I sent her pics every so often so she could see her condition, it worked well, the owner was only 25 mins away so she could pop in whenever she wanted to. She only visited once and was happy that I was looking after her well..

I have one on loan. Horse had been out of work, so saddle checked, teeth done and physio treatment before we commenced ridden work. Owner lives locally and has been to ride since. I do keep them updated and they are welcome anytime. I do check anything I'm unsure of. I've loaned a pony out previously and always appreciated contact.

Great thanks for replying, I send them pictures regularly, and she will hopefully come down and visit him soon but be are quite far away from each other.

I would just get on with it as if he were my own unless the owner had specified that they wanted to be consulted on particular things.

!. Check what feed he's on & decide if you need to up the feed according to what you are doing with him. Any introduction of different feed needs to be gradually introduced.
2. Speak to owner regarding horse insurance, are you paying or is she.
3. Find out if he horse has any long term injury that will need treatment.
4. If he comes with his tack, Saddle, bridle & wardrobe. If he comes with saddle try it out & if it ok then don't bother flocking. Only flock is you think there's a problem.
5. Check what bit he's ridden in or if he's ridden in one for i.e. hacking & possibly a different one for jumping.
6. Ask owner if he's had his teeth floated & when his back was last checked. Find out who the farrier is & will he be able to still attend at new stable to shoe him. Horses like a regular routine.
7, Chill & give the horse all the affection you can.

I've one on loan from a friend. She's treated just like my own horses.
I bought her a new saddle and bridle, and she's got too many rugs already, lol. All 2nd hand but she's happy.

Owner is happy for me to do my own thing with her. As she's a neighbour, she sees her all the time.

Thank you for replying, I always gradually introduce new feed anyway. I have him insured. He has never had any injuries ect. He has come with everything. Saddle fitter came yesterday and saddle In desperate need of re flocking putting weight on withers which is why I got her out. Snaffle bit for all disciplines. Teeth were done before we picked him up. Never had his back checked but want to get physio. Using my farrier as i am 2.5hrs away ?.thanks again
