I never turn my girl out with a neck, built in or removable. I find no matter what they rub her mane so won't use them as I show and not helpful having half a mane missing. Anyway she's fully clipped out but never seems cold because she's not wearing a neck. I wish I could use them more as she is a complete mud monster but even on the rare occasion that she has worn one she still manages to get filthy! Do most of you lot use them?

I bought th Amigo 1200d for my girl a couple of years ago and I really rate this rug. I ordered the neck and she wears this over the winter and it's the first rug that has never rubbed her mane out.

I use them and don't seem to have a problem. If anything I find they keep the mane all to one side as long as you put it there first.

I've been told its lack of air that makes the mane come out, not sure whether thats 100% the case though

I now fold the neck back at least once a day for an hour or so (if I cant remove the rug)

My pony has a full mane - I dont know whether its co-incidence but it works for me!

My HW Rambo TO has a neckcover, my MW is a Rhino Wug so just a high neck and my LW Bucas has a removable neck cover.

Unless it's absolutely hissing it down or it's really cold - ie: minus temps all day, I don't use neck covers. It does rub the mane away and my girl is not keen on the neck cover at all. My most used and useful rug is the MW Wug - keeps her that bit warmer but no neck :)

I have a neck cover for my stable rug - she rarely wears it though as it makes her itchy. She's never been cold in the stable. Neck covers are an unnecessary evil - IMO :D

I have never had a full neck that has rubbed the mane. I tend to find if you have a detachable neck then it can rub the mane out as they move around a bit more and also at the neck of the rug it comes out.

Must depend on horse shape. I never had a problem before, and have used rugs with neck covers regularly. But this year much to my horror I took off my Irish draught girlies well fitting rug to find 5 inches of baldness. She does have quite silky fine hair and this happened over two days. Not a good look......

I think it depends on the horse a lot, one of mine, any kind of neck cover (full/ detachable, heavy/ lightweight etc.) and literally half his mane came out in days, my other boy it never causes a problem - that's with several brands of rug. Sadly only one way to find out how your mare will cope!

It's not rubbing or lack if air

The manes fall due to the heat generated which in turn opens the hair follicles and the mane starts to fall out

Only way to advoid it happening is no neck rug.

If it's really wet then I turn mine out in a rug with a neck cover, but otherwise I prefer to let his neck go au natural (if that makes sense). I do put him to bed with a neck cover on when it's really cold, simply b/c he's not able to move about as much when stabled to keep warm (on the flip side, he stands almost knee deep in straw which sits on top of a sealed rubber mat bed with thick rubber matting a good three feet up the walls).

He's getting a second clip next week though . . . and then I'll have to be a little more vigilant about keeping his neck warm - he's a sensitive flower.

On my TB no. I always found that they made his mane fall out and he was warm enough without anyway. This was also the plan with the new cob but he is hogged and seems to struggle when it rains. I have just boguht him an Amigo with a detachable neck and he seems much happier - no mane to rub out anyway!

Ive never used anything other than standard necks for my little dartmoor - she doesnt really need a rug anyway...more for my peace of mind. :p
She's got a lovely long thick mane, rain never manages to even reach her neck fluff,so never found it necessary to add a cover.

Nelson's just started being hogged all year round, and so have purchased him a no-fill TO with attached neck - for when the weathers horrendous as ilike mine to have a leg stretch no matter how bad...so so mean hehe.;)

We all use full neck premier equine rugs and they don't rub the mane, they're good rugs :)

I've found they do rub, however TBH I think all neck rugs - either full necks or detachable - do rub. I've used them on all sizes/shapes of horse/ponies and found the same. I only use them if the weather is foul or very cold. I do try and turn them back or remove them for an hour or so or sometimes overnight to give the manes a break.

always use fal rugs
they don't rub
my late mare had staph aureus which attacks mane and makes it fall out.

the fal did not rub her. This was a serious condition which the bacteria made the hair weak.

also try http://www.tailgator.co.uk/ products

dont use lycra it will rub in the end.

I used the mark todd/ jumpers horse line combos on my thin skinned arab, her mane was almost to the point of her shoulder and they never rubbed it or made it fall out, they are lined and have an extended neck on them so when the she put her head down to graze her neck was completely covered to the base of her ears. I wont use any other make of full neck rug now.

I have always used neck covers over the years and the only rug I've ever had rub a mane really badly (which resulted in 18 inches of bald crest which took months and months to grow back in) was a Rhino heavy weight combo stable rug (http://www.equishopping.co.uk/item-cybercheckout930000905-x-parent.htm). It was because this rug had a high cut neck (like the Rambo Wug style) before the neck cover attached. It was the section of the Wug-cut high neck that rubbed so badly. I've now given that rug away.

About two weeks ago I bought my horse a Swish rug with a full neck cover. I'd always thought neck covers were a bit over the top, to be honest, but my horse decided she was fed up with Scottish weather and made me buy her one. She seems much happier now. Her mane seems fine so far. I won't be happy if it falls out.

Her stable rug doesn't have a neck, so she only wears one during turnout, from about 9am-4pm.

My 3 all have neck covers on and touch wood no rubbing.... All in different makes too. My mares fully clipped so like to keep her toasty, 4year old is a mud
Monster with full mane so its just to keep him clean! And the little hairy beast wears a neck because........ There is no reason really, she doesnt really need one apart from shes grey so it keeps her cleanish (poor excuse i know) she has a standard neck stable rug though. They are all welsh and quite chunky too with quite a bit of mane.

GreyDonkey is a fine-coated sporthorse and is kept clipped in the winter so neck covers are kind of a must to keep him warm (he drops weight in the winter). All rugs rub his mane (which is ridiculously thin) . . . so I compromise by making sure that as long as it's not too cold, his body is kept really warm and I keep the neck cover off in the field - mud is pretty easy to brush off once it's dry. In his stable, though, I am more conservative b/c he can't run around to keep warm and most nights in the winter he has a neck cover on. This week, he's been wearing a neck cover pretty much 24/7.

I always put the same weatherbeeta rug on Alfie (full neck) then spend the whole summer wishing his mane would grow back. He has that horrible brittle appy hair that breaks in the wind though. Sometimes when I take it off there are literally handfuls of it greased to the inside of his rug.
