Full or Blanket Clip living out 24/7

I agree with anymay I too would never full clip a turned out horse

For me a trace at the most.

That's just my thoughts though.

I have and always will associate full clips only with stabled horses. It's something I was taught as a kid and will stay with me till I'm old and grey.

Despite others saying that their horses are fine I agree with Amymay and others - I would never expect a full clipped horse to live out 24/7 - I think it's unfair - it leaves sensitive areas (belly/ sheath/ between hind legs) etc) exposed and they have no choice but to get on with it whether they like it or not.

But then I also think it is unfair to give a horse any kind of clip and leave it out 24/7 unrugged regardless of how fat it is. Extra work and restricted grazing would be kinder.

I have seen horses in these situations whose owners claim that they are fine/happy yet their clips grow out reasonably quickly and with long 'cat' hairs growing through - these are signs that the horses have been cold :-( Highly unfair.

I currently have an ID rising 2 yr old who is fully clipped (she had rather a lot of little visitors!!!) and she has on a 100g combo and was a bit warm today!!! I used to have a cob that when fully clipped required at least two very heavy rugs to feel anywhere near warm so they all different!!

I always clip according to the work they are doing and then rug with that and the weather in mind. Mine has had all weight rugs on and off this winter. He is out all the time and I generally do a half neck low chaser, so I can take more off later, leaving head and legs on.

I'm another that wouldn't fully clip a horse living out.

If restricted diet and exercise aren't working, then most vets would recommend leaving unrugged, as your cob is already unrugged then the most I would do is a bib clip.

He only had a small bib clip, and this was initially done as he was sweating and uncomfortable just in the field, regardless of what exercise he was doing. I know my horse, he is perfectly happy - trust me! He would tell me if he wasn't!!

What about hay or do you mean no hard feed?

He gets a lite balancer and that's it.
