Hi everyone,

Do any of you know where I can get a full width breast bar for my Rice trailer? Also, if anyone has experience of travelling a larger horse in a trailer with no partition I'd be interested to hear how you get on, as that's how I'd like to travel my boy....

Hi,
I travel my horse without the partition and she's only 16hh. I prefer to travel horses that way partly because I think they like to stand at a slight angle to the way you are travelling and also because it gives them room to spread their feet so they have better balance. I have an Ifor and I got my full length breatbar from the manufacturers.

Well I first took the partition out with my previous horse who simply wouldn't go in with the partition in but was perfectly fine when the partition was taken out and I never saw the need to put it back in.
Also my friend has a horse that was terrified of trailers and if you could get him to load he would throw himself on the floor as soon as it started to move and yet I've had him in my trailer without the partition and he travelled no problem at all and now loads sweetly too.
I generally don't feel my horse moving around too much in the back of the trailer - although I do hear her moving her feet occasionally.
On long journeys when I've stopped to check her over she always looks relaxed and bored if anything. I took her to the UK Chasers finals in Warwickshire a few years ago and worried about her going on such a long journey but it bothered her not a jot. I broke the journey in 2 and stayed at Markfield overnight and she was the same to ride when we got there as if we'd gone to our local venue.
She's generally a very good traveller anyway though, munches her haynet and never sweats up at all. I think the telling thing for me was how much better my friends horse travelled without the partition as previously they hadn't even been able to get him off the yard before he got worked up.

Thanks Ann-jen, that's made me feel better about it. He will load onto a trailer with a partition, but hes never that keen on it. I just think it's nicer for them to have a bit more room. Once he's in he travells ok anyway, but I'd like to make it as nice an experience as possible. I suppose the key is to take it slowly and keep checking on him like you said. Do you have a single strap accross the back of the trailer as well and if so did you get that from the manufacturer?

When my large horse was young I travelled her in the old Rice with just a breastbar....she was fine. I ordered the parts from my local Rice agent - he advised that as all trailers get a bit individual with age and use, to DIY the bar from parts in situ so that it's M2M to your trailer. Just needed an electric drill.

When/if you do travel without a partition (I always do!) please remember to cross tie your horse so he can't turn round one way or other. Someone I worked for years ago, travelled their big hunter on just one tie, as they were turning a corner they felt a lurch but horse seemed ok; next morning, it could hardly move and it had broken 2/3 vertebrae in the lower neck which they believe happened as they turned, he was craning his neck round or something and lurched into the side causing compression fractures; he had to be put down - so now I won't travel anywhere unless they're cross tied.

I have one I no longer use but I am in Northumberland, I think the postage would be quit high though. I got mine made by a local metalworks, contact me if you are interested.
