She'll be having her cushings recheck anyway so will have a chat with the vet to see if anything else needs doing. She's always been a hot horse though, just never had her clipped since she was 6/7 (permanent injuries meant early retirement and a lovely life of luxury for my lovely girl!) so I'm unsure whats 'normal' for her when clipped. I have a feeling it probably just is her norm though and due to the very mild weather. We've even turned our heat off in the house today! I was just interested when I posted to see if anyone else's horse was the same and it seems there are some. I don't feel overly concerned now - one bonus to having a horse that isn't greedy is that I usually know if she is feeling unwell by what she is eating. The downside is that getting her to eat supplements I want her to eat can be hard work!
if you try the skratch - I think the liquid is more palatable then the powder. luckily my boy would eat anything ( except worming tablets and antibiotics ! )
Strangely she's OK eating antibiotics! That's usually though, the problem with her new more 'natural' diet is its then harder to disguise supplements. She's eating it all up at the moment though but is only on half the recommended amount of the forageplus balancer, although we will try to gradually increase it again soon. She has mint mixed in - which smells yummy to me! I think we'll probably need to change her to the progressive earth pro hoof in the end which she ate fine when they sent the sample. Thanks for the tip on the skratch supplement.
my 6yr old nf is fully clipped and out in the day unrugged. i initially did it to stop him going through the fencing but am going to keep him unrugged as he is still warm. He isnt shivering or dropping weight, has plenty to eat to keep warm.
he has a LW stable rug on at night but doesnt really need it.
of course when it gets colder then he will have more added as needed.
Hi I have the same problem with my older horse, he like yours has always been a warm horse. He grows a thick coat, he has been tested for cushings but is fine. I am planning to clip him next Monday, as he gets scabs on his flanks and armpits because he is getting too warm. He hates being clipped so I only do it if absolutely necessary. As its soo mild this is now the case. He rarely ever has a rug on with any form of fill in. But when needed I tend to use fleeces, I have one that is classed as a cooler, very thin fleece material, a weather beta fleece ( the one with the shiny neck insert so it doesn't stretch). I also have a very thick Rambo fleece. These seem to do the job. The last time he wore his 100 g rug was when it was -18 a couple of winters ago.
But best to get your horse vet checked just in case tho. Good luck x
