I know I've probably been banging on about it, but today was my first attempt at one day event in 12 years. I was terrified and didn't sleep a wink last night, and the fences were only 2'3"!!
I walked the course yesterday and was a little worried about a "big" brush fence that had a downhill approach. My husband is 6'1" and this is him doing something daft with his arms at it, and I think it's maybe a bit bigger than 2'3"?....
I must also add that jumping doesn't come naturally to me or my mare, we both get the collywobbles and frequently wimp out. My last 2 competitions I have fallen off (Once bucked off in a dressage warm up
and last time when she stopped at a spooky fence in the show jumping of a combined training). Yes, we are bad, really bad.
LOADS of lessons with a fab, understanding instructor and we get to today....
Dressage was okay, she broke in her 1st canter and stuck off wrong in the second, both very quickly corrected. And we very nearly had an abrupt poo-stop mid walk across the area! I ended up on 34 and was 4th out of 26 after dressage.
Show jumping wasn't stylish (I screamed a la Karin Donkers over the bright filler at 3
), and nearly completely missed a fence on a dog leg, but turned her to it at a dodgy angle and she jumped it. I was quite shocked to go clear, and move up to 2nd.
By this point it was raining a lot, and we got to go XC straight away. She was amazing! More screaming and growling over the first which was quite spooky and caused lots of bother, and then she took me round like a pro. She looked ready to go again when we finished!
And I was utterly speachless to come 1st! So I have a lovely 4 tier red rosette and a very big smile on my face.
I feel a bit daft for doing a such a tiny one day event, but if we need to get some confidence before we attempt big scary things. Afterall, I'm still a wimp even if she is a superstar!
Photos will be up tomorrow maybe so I'll post a link.
