RI recommended a full cheek / fulmer for my 5 yr (maybe younger) cob

she is in a french link snaffle at the mo.

Can any one give me ANY pointers?

there are so many!

My first thought is to stay with a french link if it's working. Shy HATES anything other than a french link, as his tongue is so fleshy, so whatever bit style you go for stick with the FL. :) Oh and a fulmer must always be used with the fiddly leather keepers (drove me nuts !) to keep it at the right level.

Are you having trouble in the steering department, out of interest ?

yea starting lessons on her last week and had lots of nightmare steering and gate napping!

RI said she may be younger than she was sold to me as :/ and although she learns quick, it will be a lot less exhausting for me if i can nip the napping & spinning in the bud at the start of the sessions and shell settle!

so a french link full cheek exists? like this?

Know about ring styles? i like the D-Ring on her now but there is loose rings, any difference?

The bit on ebay is what you're looking for - sounds ideal to get going with :) She may even prefer a Happy Mouth bit (the same style but a kind of plastic), see what your instructor says.

Bits are a total minefield, but I think this is as good a place as any to start. Sure there'll be lots more advice for you from other peeps ;)

PS that bit is NOT a fulmer, fulmers have slightly curved thinner ends, which slot into the keepers. That pic is of a full cheek, french link snaffle !!

thanks :) the minute i find one that she goes better in, she hit ANOTHER problem and she should use another one.. thanks for the help :)

ill have a little gander!

I was sorting out bits today - Shy has one of the above bits, a copper roller D ring (he loves), a hanging cheek (he loves), a sweet iron standard snaffle (detests) a kimblewick (good for fast work), a rubber mullen snaffle (he hates), and about six more all hated, but suggested as he was a stroppy sod.

And I often ride bitless anyway, so god knows what I was thinking. But i do get a lot of stuff secondhand on ebay - just put it thru the dishwasher before use !

Cobs have fleshy tongues, and often don't like thick bits, even though they are supposed to be kinder.

My pony has a french link full cheek bit, i can steer her in it, she does run off whilst hacking and takes a while to slow but i still have breaks, also i wouldn't recommend you get a happy mouth plastic bit, my pony chewed the plastic and it ended up quite sharp with parts sticking out so had to change.

I don't think my pony likes the bit anymore as she refuses any contact and will not at all bring her head/neck into a nice shape! Think i'm going to try a hanging cheek.
