I think they are supposed to increase the poll action of a fulmer and also to stop the side bits going up ponys nose when you put they bridle on. But i think im right in saying you have a full cheek snaffle not a fulmer.
they're used on full cheeks and fulmers to keep the bit sitting correctly in the horses mouth so that the cheeks work as intended - to help with steering.
possibly to help the poll action too but i didnt think those types of bit worked on poll action all that much?
they are used to stabilise the bit in the horses mouth- with fulmer loops, the bit has the action of an eggbutt ring, e.g doesn't move much. without the loops, the bit moves like a loose ring.
If I use a full cheek/fulmer now I always use the loops after an accident I saw with a horse we used to race. He fell at a fence and all I remember when I ran down to him was the sight of the bit all twisted wrongly in his mouth and the cheekpiece digging into his face. The cheekpiece of the bit had hit the ground and rotated in his mouth, if they'd used loops this couldn't have happened. I know it's not that that killed him but it must have been pretty damn painful in his mouth as he hit the ground
