Just wondering - which do you think is better and why? Have been looking a full cheek lozenge bit for my 5yo but was wondering if a fulmer would be better to stop leaning?
All opinions welcome

I use a cyprium full cheek french link on my lad and the contact seems to be pretty good

I realise i dont know you and your 5yr old,but couldnt you drop your contact slightly so he has nothing to lean on and drive from behind so you are pushing him up onto the bit??I have seen people before that have horses that lean drop the contact from their hands and pushing horse on which has made them think because suddenly there is nothing to hold onto but they are being made to move forward and gathered up afterwards??if that makes sense??lol!!

but my main 'leaning issue' is when hacking - and I really don't want to kick on when hacking lol. You're both right though *chants leg leg leg*
Hadfos - where did you get your cyprium (sp) one?

I have had it yrs now and only just started using it again(didnt give him chance to get used to it,he started leaning onit

,lol)he now works well on it,all i can find is rideaway etc that sell the loose ring

OMG i can only find it on an american site

,guess when mine has worn out will have to import one, saddlers etc over here only do loose ring now!!

As the loose ring fulmer should be used with keepers to keep the mouthpiece at the correct angle in the mouth you have less play on it than the fixed cheek as the keepers are personal preferance on this type of bit. I have a french link fixed cheek which I use without keepers.

Well after spending over half an hour talking to a bit woman at Burghley on exactly the same subject a fulmer will stop leaning and give you a bit more say in what the horse does as a rider!!

I use a fulmer with Genie every now and again for two reasons. When we're jumping it helps with the steering a bit! Also she is not able to lean on it quite so much. When not using it I use a loose ring snaffle for the same reason.

saddlesore .. dont let him lean and more leg out hacking to drive forward from behind, and maybe a long schooling whip to tap him along when he doesnt respond to your leg. no use not being consistent in what you want be it in the school and out hacking. schooling whips are very effective and reduces the need to nag with your leg.
