Not one single rider has been nominated for british sports personality of the year. Were gold medals and that many not enough for them

here here!!!! shocked and horrified....never won a dressage medal before are then we get 2 GOLDS!
and the paraolympics...well lets not go there!

Now you know exactly how the jump racing fraternity felt when the greatest jockey of all time was not nominated for about 13 years, and then only after a concerted campaign.
It is named "personality" though it tends to be about special achievement in a high profile sport, this does not include many horsey sports as they are not mainstream.
Athletes have more time available to self-promote, and they often have sport agents who look after their interests: being an athlete is now a career which includes sports motivation, talks, brand promotion and so on.
Riders have to go back to work the day after the Gold Medal, and every day after that.

Actually not watching it for that exact reason!! Think its totally disgraceful and now I wonder what on earth it will take for our athletes (both the horses and riders) to get the recognition they deserve after their fantastic achievements this summer some of which are in fact the making of British equestrian sporting history!

Miss l toe. I do feel the pain of what you described. I just dont no when or how horse riding is ever going to be any better or high profile then it is now and I thought that should be recognised. It is just a bit rude franklin. Also a few of the other sports should have been represented

Probably because Zara won it in 2006. Doesn't excuse the fact that our equestrian teams did a fantastic job and do deserve recognition but I imagine there would have been some very tough decisions to make after this year spectacular performances from our olympic athletes.

Going back 20 yrs or so there was always a member of Team GB up there. That was when they put HOYS on the BBC and even non horsey people knew who Milton was.

It's a shame but alas, the back page sports stars are the ones most commonly recognised, regardless of whether they have a personality or not (*cough* Andy Murray *cough*)

Just had a big discussion with OH about it. I think it shouldn't be awarded this year as it is so hard to choose. He says it shouldn't be awarded any olympic year in that case.

He argues that BW and AM etc are nominated for their achevements in their "world champs" not the lympics - as was Zara..

Personally I think its a bit like the Oscars, means absolutely nothing really.

To be fair, we've had that discussion and all came to the conclusion that bar the golfer (not a sport, it's a skill!) you couldn't have chucked someone off that list for a horsey person...

Perfect words from Charlotte...we are the ones who do our sport sitting down, but what if your seat can listen, obey react??

That said she did forget to mention the seat can also disobey, argue and potentially kill...maybe that wouldn't have made for such inspirational viewing :D

I loved that quote but you've got it spot on! :D

I do agree those nominated are brilliant athletes but so are risers like Charlotte Dujardin coming up from nothing to double old medalist in such a. Short time. Carl Hester helping get dressage where it is now... I just don't think people understand the difficulty of getting a horse to pirouette, jump a large solid fence not knowing where it I going to land... Need more wise words from Charlotte..this sport has come so far we deserve to be up there very very soon!
