I have been riding my 4yo in the sand school for the past few weeks because the fields are so wet. She is 16.2hh and the sand school is only 20x40 so there isn't much room to canter or jump. She seems to find it boring and its getting hard to keep her attention. Does anyone know any fun things to do in such a little area? They dont have to teach her anything, just a bit of fun. Thanks.

Police horse style training in hand....tarps and other scary items scattered around the school and gradually get her used to each one....when you get good you can do this ridden

Poles can be a lot of fun. You can do loads of things with them, but some ideas include:

Place 4 poles in a large square shape (large enough so that you can ride between the poles). You can now go across the diagonal and over two of the poles, change direction and do the other diagonal, or do smaller circles around one pole.

Place two poles sideways next to each other with plenty of space in between and practice doing loops around them.

Trotting poles are also fun.

On the tarp idea. My 17hh 6 year old wild man took to it too well. I 'tarped' him we walked over it trotted over it got on board and repeated the exercise and what did he do?

When I started on my canter work he thought 'I know she likes the tarp I'll canter over it for her' and thats exactly what he did quick swerve I'll call a 5 metre loop and Zip over the tarp we went!!
