I was going to put this in the competing section but it doesn't seem serious enough for that....

So now that my daughter is riding our loan pony on the lead rein regularly and doing well I am considering taking them to do the fancy dress class at one of our local shows next month. Thinking about what we already have in the fancy dress box, I know we have a really nice Swiss style Heidi costume that an elderly relative brought back from holiday for her. Anyone got any ideas on how to turn a palomino 11.2 welsh a into a goat??

Or any other ideas for easy to put together costumes for a 3 year old plus pony? Other one that came to mind was the bandaged up child and neck sign for pony saying "FOR SALE, GREAT WITH KIDS"

I'm useless at this sort of thing - no imagination, but go to google images and google "fancy dress for horses". There's a cow and sheep on there - depending on how chilled out your pony is! Personally, I do rather like the sound of the bandaged child and "for sale" sign :D

I've been doing fancy dress classes with my recently turned 4yo son on his lead-rein pony. A handy thing Im glad I bought early on was a bright red full face lycra hood, so far its been used as part of a superhero costume (son was batman, pony was robin with a cloak over her quarters and bright green socks pulled up over her knees.

We used the same hood as part of the most recent costume which was pony as a dragon with attached foam spines/spikes along her neck and back (attached to a red bed sheet) and down her tail (matching colour tail bandage wrapped round them to keep them in place). My son was the knight as he had a medieval costume already complete with sword and shield and his 7yo female friend was the maiden dressed in dress, handmade big hat and she carried a cardboard painted turret! We won with that one out of a big class ;)

We also did a first aid type one with pony as the injured patient (covered in plasters, scruffy mane/tail with bits of hay stuck in, bandaged legs etc. with ketchup on (my son and his friends idea!), he was dressed as a doctor carrying a case, his friend was the nurse and had a clip board with notes written out (name of patient (name of pony) etc.).

Definately its effort they seem to look for in young kids fancy dress, ideally things the kids have clearly helped with (which is hard when they're still so young...).

14 year old me dressed my bay cob (called bumble) as a bumble bee and painted yellow stripes on her with some antennas on a headband and some wings on her back whilst I dressed as a flower. (Some very embarrassing old pics of that one) A few years ago my friend dressed her daughter's pony (called Milly) as a millipede by sewing loads of stuffed legs onto a black rug and putting it on her along with lots of eyes stuck to her face. Both very tolerant ponies!

With a palamino a relatively simple on is "red indian". You can get red indian costumes relatively easily. An elastic band around the hat holds a feather - or you can go the whole hog and make a full on indian headdress over the hat. Beige Jhods and Jhoddie boots. Plait smaller feathers into the mane and tail. The use toddler proof washable paint to make the paint signs on the horse. My (ahem...) 17 year old daughter did this with her few spot Appie recently. You can go all authentic and research what all the various paint signs mean - or just stick a few handprints on her and a circle around one eye.

Longer term - when we were fairly into this years ago I had an old lightweight cotton stable sheet, a second hand exercise sheet and a full body lycra thingy which formed the base for pretty much anything we could dream up for the very tolerant pony.

Whatever you choose (Sis and I as adults have dressed us and the horses as many things over the years :p ) please make sure that the child is as involved as possible in making the costume, judges will ask the little ones what they have done to help create the costume, "Mummy did it all" does not go down well with a child oriented judge :)

Once saw a child dressed up as the milky bar kid on his lovely palomino pony, had even stuck milky bar wrappers onto the saddlecloth!

I did a fancy dress class recently. I wore a bear onesie and Bobbi had a red checked duvet cover on with paper plates, cups, fake sandwiches and cakes (made out of sponges) all over it, a kid's tea set on her bum and some teddy bears on her back. Teddy bear's picnic!
