Hi all
One of my herd has a skin rash...and I don't want to take any chances so intend to bathe it with a shampoo effective against bacterial and fungicidal infections.
Can anyone suggest a non-prescription shampoo/wash or even cream I can use over the weekend?

Toddle down to your your local pharmacist and get one of those over the counter dandruff shampoos - they seem to deal with nasties like mud fever and raninscald quite nicely - Nizoral is very good

My vet has just looked at a strange rash on the cob.

His diagnosis? 'Hmm, scabby. Wash it with hibiscrub and put some Fucedin H (sp?) on and keep an eye on it.'

So.... Hibiscrub!

I'd like to cover fungal infections too...to be on the safe side...mud fever and rainscald are bacterial....Hibiscrub is anti-microbial, but not Fungicidal....
Are Fucidin H and Nizoral fungicidal then?

ETA - I googled both...and neither are...

I've used athlete's foot stuff with success before now but not cheap.
Tea tree is effective against all manner of things even MRSA apparently, so perhaps shampoo with that?

My horse is, of course, allergic to Tea tree oil....

Hmm, don't think Fucidin is.... Tea tree is though. You could add some to hibiscrub wash?

ETS - damn, just seen post above!!!

Maliseb (think thats how its spelt) is a fungicidal shampoo that you can get from your vets.

Thanks, but I can't get the vet until Monday...and want to stop anything nasty being passed on.

I use Equine Health and Herbal Tea Tree shampoo. Clears everything. We had a horse nearly completely bald with a fungal skin infection. I tried recommended - expensive - things that did not work. This shampoo worked first time. I use the Soothit cream on sores and the tea tree lotion on rashes etc. It realy does work. Have tried it on shetlands to shires and have not had a bad reaction and always has worked quickly.
Hope it clears soon - watch out for your scales

I use the *clean up* on snoop when he had an allergic reaction to a fly bite, cleared him up a treat, plus his mud fever legs.
The Medivet I use after riding as winston is allergic to his own sweat.

Dunno if any of these will be of any use?

Theres also this one... new on the market, but havent used it myself..

No, no, I'm being practical

...if it is something nasty and contagious beginning with 'R' then I don't want to bring her into the yard to infect everything and everyone else....
If I were evil, I'd be rubbing her on all the competition horses...

If you think it might be 'R' try well diluted Virkon S (just keep it away from eyes mucus membranes and other sensitive bits)

What product did you end up using?

I stole some Malaseb (both batericidal and fungicidal) from the YO...well, she gave me it
grin.gif

And having looked at Virkon-S, it says on the packet that it's viricidal, nothing about bacteria or fungi, so I asked my very understanding pharmacist who gave me Milton baby stuff....to disinfect all horse's brushes etc in.
My next dilemma is washing her rugs - I have been told that rug washing man doesn't bother to disinfect when asked (but pretends he does

)...my plan had been for him to do them. I don't like the thought of the rugs spinning around, potentially passing on whatever my youngster has to other rugs...so I guess I'm going to have to do a mass disinfecting at home...then get him to wash them?

besr of luck - at least all your rugs will be washed & ready for next winter - unlike most of us who leave it until the last minute!

Thanks.
I'm now thinking it might have just been easier to sell her and buy another skin disease-free youngster!
