Has anyone else had a bag (s) of hi-Fi Lite that smells funny??

I opened a new bag yesterday, BBD Mar 2010 and it smelt absolutely disgusting - difficult to describe but maybe a bit fishy or like something had died

not off exactly (can chaff actually go off ?)

Anyway I get my feed from YO who bulk orders so I told her and exchanged it as she said she could sent it back. Opened next bag and it smells the same!! Some people think it smells weird but ok, some say it smells dodgy! YO is using it for full liveries feeds, she reckons its ok.

I've given that back too and going to get some from shop tomorrow to see if I can get a different batch as my boy is 28 and I'm not prepared to risk it.

Someone at yard said to me perhaps they have changed their recipe - do they do that ? Cos if nothing else the smells makes me feel sick so hope its not a new 'version' !!!

Chaff can definatly go off, YO had some apple chaff the other day she opened the bag and it was rotting and disgusting! I would say good on you for following your instincts and not feeding it as it really doesn't sound right.

There was a post on here a couple of months ago - there was a fire at the Dengie warehouse and it contaminated some of the stock. Take it back.

Ooooh really - now that's interesting. Something like that would make sense as I can't put my finger on the smell it has....

Ditto that. I've just opened a bag of good dooer (Best before Dec 2010) and it smells fine

I had a bag of Hi-Fi Lite a few weeks ago that smelt horrible, I phoned Dengie and they sent me a bag to send them a sample back to them. They said that they had used a new supplier for the coating on their chaff and they were aware of the problem. They sent me a voucher for another bag and also a voucher for £20 of their products. They said that the smelly chaff was perfectly OK to feed and my horses didn't seem to mind it as I fed it to them when I first opened the bag. It's worth contacting Dengie because they need to know that the problem still exists.

I also have a bag BBE March 2010. It smells a bit different and has a slight fishy smell but horses are eating it (the fat one was off his food for a week so I have been feeding him something different each day trying to eliminate the problem and he didn't have a problem with the new chaff). I did notice that it is very green as opposed to the light yellow/golden brown colour it used to be and assumed it was a different crop. Anyone else notice a change in colour? Last batch was bought a couple of months ago as I buy huge amounts in bulk.

why don't you all buy chaff cutters like we had in the old days, use to use hay and oat straw to bulk out feeds. Now I buy the winergy range my four are doing well on it.
