My friend and I once went on a long hack which took us past my Mum's house. We stopped for a cuppa and let the horses have a few mouthfuls of the long grass behind her house whilst Mum got them some water. One of the neighbours came out to tell us we shouldn't let them eat the long grass because they can get laryngitis from it.
I can only assume someone had informed him vaguely about laminitis at some point. We thanked him for his concern and explained they were unlikely to get ill from eating a couple of mouthfuls of long grass
