Fur growth on wound areas

Hi all, my horse had an accident in the Horsebox and as well as a fractured pedal bone he has several areas of skin and hair loss to his face, legs and stifles, I’ve been applying flamazine as advised by the vet and although the wounds are healing well, I was wondering if anyone had any advice what I can put on to encourage fur growth? And do you think it will grow back it’s natural colour? Or white, he is a dark bay. Thanks

I don't think there's much you can do apart from just do good wound care. I had a dark bay get a nasty leg wound, twice (nutter horse). It healed really well and he didn't get white hair but he did have a bald patch. I used silver spray and manuka honey. Kept the wound moist as it healed. I would probably use a good wound gel now.

Thank you I’ll get something that will keep them moist, some are very dry and dry skin coming off, I’m hopeful they don’t go white as he has a right scrap down the right side of his face ?

I think there's a chance they'll go white if they are wide scrapes rather than deep cuts. I'm not sure what the criteria are for the hairs going white... how deep they have to be etc. The deep cut on my gelding's leg that got stitched didn't get white hairs but he went to a new home while it was still healing so don't know if they came in later at all.

But there's nothing you can do to change it apart from helping them heal as best you can so it might be a case of just accepting his badges of honour!

You could try coconut oil. It was recommended to us when our ponies were freeze branded. Worked really well.

Ok thank you, I’m not bothered about scars as I just want him right, his badges of honour will turn him into a skewbald if they turn white ?

I think it depends on the horse to some extent whether they will get white hairs. I've had ones in the past who never grew any despite quite nasty wounds, they were mainly bay and black ponies. I have a chestnut pony at the moment who likes play fighting and every little nip from his pal which are quite minor marks seems to grow back white. He must have 20 little white spots on him from barely noticeable bites. Good job he's not a show horse.

I used coconut oil when my boy skinned his knees after a fall. Worked for him, hair came back and no change in colour, though that maybe because the damage was not deep.

I've used Camrosa ointment over the years with very good results.

white pepper - my dad swore by it. It helps with healing and helps prevent scaring which causes the white hairs. We were heavily into our showing so it was important not to have scars and white marks on our ponies.
