Furious with my mare! Healing vibes needed

Ellie ripped her leg open in the field today. God knows how; in a field with no other horses, decent fencing and no objects other than a water butt

She's got two triangular gashes, one on the cannon bone about 3 inches long, another right on her knee. They both seem very clean, and the guys at the yard (who are well used to hunting / team chasing injuries) seem to think it might heal back together, rather than having to cut the skin away.

I'm so cross with her!!!! Nine years of no injuries, then two in five weeks. Grrrrrrr

I'm so cross as she's just a floozy - I turned her out after riding this morning and she was squealing at the ponies before I'd even taken her leadrope off - and they were about 50 metres away

I've only ridden 4 times since she came back into work from her hock injury

Healing vibes coming your way...
My previous mare did the same last year. Terrible injuries from a field with good fencing and plastic water troughs out on her own. Couldn't find anything to suggest how injuries were caused. No blood anywhere, nothing!!! Quite worrying really!

She has got company, on all three sides of the paddock! Obviously she's on her own in her field, but that was the decision we made after another horse kicked the sh*t out of her at the previous yard

She's definitely not gone over - the wound was too clean, given the mud we have at the moment! And the fence had gone a bit baggy, hence why we think she got her leg caught. Needless to say we will be out with our hammer and staples tomorrow

Oh dear. I'm amazed she found anything to hurt herself on, do you think she put her foot through the tape?

Typical I was going to ask you if you fancied doing some XC schooling when Ellie is back to fitness.

Well her field is fenced with one two strands of tape, one of wire (smooth) - I think somehow she got her leg through it and pulled back. It's the only explanation we can think of - it's not a kick wound, and there are no sharp objects at all! I think she'd also only just done it (ie. within the last hour) when I got her in - as the blood looked very red and fresh. Darned mare

But yes, when she is back in work, I would love to do some (diddy!) XC schooling

mine did something similar last week - she was very much in season and we think she got her back legs through the fence when 'presenting' herself to the geldings next door! She came in with various cuts and scrapes and one swollen hind leg so had to get the vet.

So I can sympathise 100%! Hope yours is feeling better soon.

Yep you're quite right, it could be a lot worse! I dont want to hype it up at all - both this and the previous injury are thankfully superficial, but all the same it is bloomin' annoying!

Oh [****] MixElz poor Ellie if they are triangular in shape they do tend to heal really well, did you get them stitched? one of our showing mares fell onto a metal beam slashed open her fetlocks in two traingles, vet sticthed her up and you can hardly notice them they healed in weeks, vet said they would heal better than other wounds becuase of the shape and dircetion of the wounds, hope the same goes for Ellie! x
