Speaking to a friend yesterday, she said that two girls on her yard have been using furniture polish on their horses' coats for showing! She was concerned about the safety of this. Sounds bizarre to me -is this a known technique?

I use it on tails, never had one drop off yet

Masses of the stuff was used on the showing yard I worked at.

I'd def. patch test if using it on a coat. IMO it's no different to using any of the silicon-based 'horsey' coat shine products, except for it being decidedly cheaper!

We used to use it on tails at the hunt yard. At home I use baby oil, mainly because I ended up with bottles of the stuff when pregnant and never used it once. Makes the tails super easy to brush through. The smell of dettol scented steam and mr sheen brings back lots of memories lol

I know lots of people who use furniture polish on tails - especially showjumpers. Personally I think it makes the hairs look a bit dry but it does a good job on detangling and excellent for general usage.

Not heard of it being used on coats though

I use it on my cobs tail which is massive. Dont put anything on his coat as a rule unless we're showing, but Mr Sheen works a treat and much cheaper than the horesy products!

oh yes - 38p tesco value furniture polish - much better than £10 a bottle of whatever mane and tail shine you wish to indulge for you ponio

I think there was an article in HH a while ago on it....

**** WARNING about the use of FURNITURE polish on animals **

FURNITURE POLISH: contain petroleum distillates, which are highly flammable and can cause skin and lung cancer. They contain nitrobenzene, which is easily absorbed through the skin and extremely toxic.

Well said Texel. I can't believe people will happily use this on their horses when it's not actually formulated for them - it's formulated for WOOD! Wonderfully intelligent thing to do... not

Have to agree - plus silcon products on hair are not that good either.

Simple pig oil and and water is a great gloss and detangler for every day use and very cheap. For really tangled hair, survivor detangler from Equss does not have any silcon and is the best you can use - and I have tried the lot.

Sorry this made me laugh, the realisation that this product is designed for WOOD not HORSES. who thought whilst cleaning their house, 'oh look at my shiny clean table, I know I will now polish my horse'....sorry but the connection is undetectable to me....lol

on a serious note, its really not a good idea, there are products out their designed for horses that will cover them in silicon if you really want them to...???? maybe like suggested good old elbow grease.....(but that is probably so last year)
