Further to afew discussions on water - how much is enough?

Every horse is different, my current one will not drink much but after consulting old owner this is normal so not worried. If your horse is drinking the usual amount for them I would not be worried, I also find the pinching the skin on the neck trick helps if you are worried :)

depends on many things but approx (first fig is average, other two are the highest and lowest figures for a 'healthy' horse)
410kg horse - 20litres per day (but could be 13.5l to 27l)
545kg horse - 27litres per day (but could be 18 to 36)
680kg horse - 36litres per day (but could be 22 to 45)

You must have looked this up the same time as me!!
Looks like I need to buy another water trough!

I have not measured how much water we've been giving ours at all but they seem to have enough. We have 5 and two come in at night and have a large bucket of water each, neither of which are completely empty in the morning. When out in the day we've been giving them about 2 large buckets of water and these are topped up again in the evening for the 3 who are our 24/7. There is always at least one bucket that has water left in it and they are by no means desperately thirsty when the buckets are topped up.

I don't get the theory about giving them warm water though? They wouldn't ordinarily drink warm water so i don't see there us any need for us to give them warm water. we have been adding a bit of hot water to feeds some times to take the ice off the sugar beet but i don't give them hot water.

I very much doubt Gerry is drinking the recomended amount at the moment. My theory tends to be that as long as he always has some left that I'm giving him enough.

Have to say I've never even thought about measuring water. I know I changed from an automatic drinker to buckets this summer and my lad was getting quite close to the bottom of his bucket overnight so I just gave him a second bucket! He now has plenty left in the morning but at least I know he's drunk his fill.

We have never bothered measure. Just give them loads and they can have as much as they want. They always have a large tubtrug in their boxes.

their water intake depends on the amount of dry fibrous food they are consumming. so at the moment where hay is the main bulk on offfer they will drink more.(how many cream crackers can you eat before you slurp some water??) when eating green grass (not much to be found this winter) they will drink less(as it has a very high water content). feeding them hot/warm feeds might make you feel better but as it raises the core temp will actually make them feel colder after half an hour. best to feed normal feeds damped with cool(not cold not frozen) water or beet pulp.

I have certainly noticed a difference in my 3 this winter, we moved them to my friends for winter and she has loads and loads of grass left, so when there isnt snow on the ground they prefer to munch grass that the big bale in the field (live out 24/7) not only does the hay last longer :-) but I don't have to fill the water trough as often, normally two 30 litre container does it a day, but while we have snow hiding the grass and they are munching hay instead, I am having to put 6-8 containers in every other day. eeek! keeps life fun when you have to defrost the tap each time, and my old boy who has loads of fast fibre for his tea is always the one see drinking the most :-)

Never really thought about exact amounts before but certainly interesting.
