I am just starting out on photography with a dslr camera and want to get into photographing horses, not at a professional level at this point.
Do you have any tips on how to get a great shot eg distance from subject, best angle for certain types of shot (maybe an example photo to show outcome?)

Have a look in the photo gallery, there are some great threads in there with some very good advice.
Look out for posts by Users Pons and Wildoat.
I have posted a couple of photo threads, you can view those via my profile/post history :)
 
You could contact local shows and ask if you would be able to go along to do some photography, explain that you are trying to gain experience. I have found that most a very welcoming :)

If you have any local horsey friends on different yards you could also ask if you could go a long a do some "photo shoots", again explain why.

Becoming a decent equine photographer (well, photographer full stop) is so much more than having a fancy DSLR and pointing and shooting.

I've been doing photographer for about 8 years now, and I am still learning.

Thank you Bourbons for this advice, it certainly does give me food for thought and great ways to gain experience. I can't see my friends saying no to a free photo shoot ;)
 
I'm do doing the same, I put a post on local Facebook groups saying I was looking for subjects any volunteers, I explained I wasn't a professional just learning and wanting to play around a bit but people could have copies of pics done on disc. Got a good few responses, I did one with 2 girls and their horses on yard, walking down lane then ridden in school and jumping. I had planned to do more but got I'll so hoping to again sometime. Also just used to sit in fields with liveries and snap away, and go to Dartmoor.

Local shows don't seem to mind either.

I like getting some shots from low angles. The problem I have at the moment is I need a bigger lens! Its frustrating as you can only get so close! Will have to save
 
The other place is local rescue centres, some really like photos and happy to provide subjects in return for copies of the pics which they can then use for publicity or just on website etc.
