I rode this afternoon and got 2 out of 5 canters on the bad rein correct!!! (Previously it was 0 without going over a pole)

Thank you for all your suggestions - I kindof used a combination of everyhting - keeping my hands up and half halting to slow him right down, but keep the impulsion (so it was almost a walk to canter) and making sure I was sitting straight, and then over exagurating the aids and it worked!!

This has probably been suggested but as well as several half halts prior to canter transition, try flexing the horse's head to the OUTSIDE when you ask for canter - this is because you want the outside hind (left) to start the strike off. This was a Carl Hester tip and he knows more than me about dressage!!!
