Modern saddles are made with the stirrup loop, although it is still not the thing to do in showing, as traditionally that isn't what they were used for, and if you look at the showing saddles the loop is not incorperated into them! I always loop mine through though, unless I am showing!!

I have always put the spare bit of leather through that loop too!
