The big mare seems to be doing ok! still have everything crossed, BUT it has stayed put and she has been eating grass all day today. We still have no idea what caused it in the first place and would be grateful if any one has any ideas. She is a 17hh 11year old shirexclydesdale, she has been showing some lowering of appetite for about 5 days, eating only about a third of what she would normaly eat of her hay and not drinking as much as usual, any ideas anyone?

that is good news, i hope she makes a full recovery as my mare did
my mare had a prolapse bowel about 10days after her first foal so i am not sure if this set it off in her case, thank god she survived, we didnt think she would after the vets prognosis, but she is still here 15yrs later, even though she tore the bowel between it coming out and the vet coming to push it back in

Glad to hear that your girl is still going strong 15 years on! Ours has not foaled at any time that we know (we've had her for 5 years) I have wondered if it is linked with her coming into season for the first time this year. The vet has little idea, as had not heard of it prior to ours ( I thought that she didn't quite believe me when I spoke to her on the phone on Monday evening!) It was only a small prolapse (about the size of a tennis ball), but did tear on the way back in and had to be stitched.

that does sound like a small prolapse which is better for her, my mares prolapse was about the size of a semi deflated netball, so big, she is very lucky and so am i to still have her
she had 5 foals after that with no ill effects, thankfully she was young and she is so tough and laid back it has all helped i reckon

i know its more common in sheep and cows, and that they have a better survival rate than horses, but i am not sure of the causes

your going through a time of it as well !! what is it with these big horses and problems atm, glad shes doing ok and hopefully will be back to normal in no time

She does seem to be picking up and we are able to get the anti-biotic into her with calm and condition, she refused point blank to eat it in bran mash,as recomended by the vet, or old faithful in desperation! Pasting her is not an option as she is as phobic about her mouth as she is her feet. Fortunately she isn't bothered about you messing under her tail
