wanting to get lily a nice showing/WH saddle, but the fylde saddles are about the top of my budget!

for anyone that hasn’t seen my threads prattling on about my darling new pony, she’s a 14.2 section d, but she doesn’t seem to have the typical section d conformation - hope you’re all sitting down for this but she does in fact have withers! and i *think* her current saddle is a medium wide/wide so she’s not as chunky as most.

i’d like to buy new and avoid the hassle and guesswork of looking for second hand saddles, i originally was leaning to a saddle company one but after doing some research i think a fylde/ideal stocked by fylde might be a safer bet - quite keen on the davina.

just a bit baffled on how to proceed! i’ve never been through the saddle buying process, and because i want a new one i can’t just have a fitter who sells second hand just bring a few to try. fylde make them based on a template and give instructions how to make one but i don’t trust myself to get it right, so i think i’d have to have a fitter come out and do it for me…is this really cheeky?! it feels rude to ask them to make me a template, when i’m not buying from them! i would like her current saddle looked it, it’s just a wintec vsd that she came with but it still needs to fit correctly whilst i’m waiting on a new one! i’d probably keep it anyway for hacking out when there’s a potential downpour and for my mum when she rides her who hates a straight cut saddle lol.

can anyone give me some suggestions on how to proceed, and thoughts on both fylde saddles and the saddle company saddles? the majority of the fylde saddles can now come with a flocked panel instead of inset which is the main downside i’ve read so far. saddle company saddles are very affordable, but i can’t help thinking there’s a reason for this and that they maybe won’t accommodate welsh conformation!

I had a SC saddle for a Clydie mare which was later altered to fit a ID. I liked it but I think you have to have a good fitter who really knows what they are doing. The SC fitting course is very short, so the fitter needs to be knowledgeable before they go on the course.

My saddle fitter always says she doesn’t mind if you buy the saddle off her or not! It’s like 20 euro for a fitting and then you can choose to take one off her or not
Her second hand saddles were in amazing shape and i knew it would fit so I did! But I really don’t think they would mind! You can ask them about it!
It’s an ideal

I wouldn't use a Fylde saddle everyday especially on a young growing horse, they have foam panels and are only really meant to be used for the showing for that reason, I've seen quite a few horses get sore backs from them being used as an everyday saddle.

I would buy a cheap decent second hand saddle for now that fits as she will most definitely grow out of it quickly, then save up for a nice show saddle for when she gets out and about, when you get her out showing initially a nice leather everyday saddle will be fine, they only really expect to see a proper show saddle at County level and I imaging that's a while away yet.

I have ridden once in a saddle company saddle and it was horrible, in your situation a nice Ideal or Black country might suit until she has finished growing.

thankyou, she’s 10 so i’m sincerely hoping she won’t have a growth spurt, she’s plenty big enough as it is!😂

many of the fylde saddles now come with a flocked panel instead of the inset ones - i don’t know all the ins and outs but i’m presuming the foam is the inset panel?? i’d definitely only go for one with flocking.

i do prefer a straight cut saddle anyway regardless of showing, will have another look at ideal!

Consider the ideal ramsey as well its the same as one of the fylde ones but flocked.
Fylde will fit saddles at shows if they are there and sometimes they have a handful of second hand ones too.

maybe phone them and find out if they will come out to fitat yours or if they are at an event in the local area

i do like that one - according to ideal it’s only available through fylde, only difference is that it’s called “marjorie” on their website. as i mentioned above, a few of the fylde ones do come flocked now, and those are the only ones i’d consider! will definitely give them a call to discuss but i’m fairly sure i’d just have to get a template done by a fitter, send it to fylde who will make it to the template, then have a fitter come out and make sure all is well.

Have a look at JP Saddles.
Not over priced, super quality and a good service.
Made me a wh/dressage type Saddle for my 12.3hh welsh Cross.
I was quite specific what I wanted and he created something to suit us both.

thankyou, i’ve sent him a message! could you possibly tell me how much yours cost if you don’t mind? i do like the idea of being able to customise the saddle in terms of what suits me and not just her!

The ideal ramsay can be ordered through any ideal stockist or through the ideal website. Ideal fitters generally wont stock them as standard as they are not in high demand but they can order them.
the Marjorie is foam and can only be bought through fylde.

This !
Fylde go to plenty of shows , all around the country ( or at least they used to when I was showing ! ) and usually have dozens of saddles with them . If you give them a call before hand , find out where they are going that would be suitable for you to attend , and give them a rough idea of what you're after , I'm sure they would take any they thought suitable for you to try . And of course if you're on a show ground there will be trial facilities/somewhere to ride !
i've always found everyone at Fylde lovely to deal with .

unfortunately i don’t have my own transport, and will only be going to our local show this year so won’t just run in to them - their actual store is less than an hour away from me though, so i could definitely go and at least speak to them and see the different saddles in person!

I am sure if you give Fylde a call, and explain what you are looking for, they will help and advise you.

And yes, the inset panels are foam, but they are offering flocked panel versions too if this is your preference. 🙂

Oh sorry I think I confused your pony with somebody else's 😂

Yeah I would definitely get a flocked one then if you can they are much better, I've only ever ridden in a Ray that's got a bit more of a knee roll than the Davina, I used to love show saddles but I need a bit more stability so I ride in dressage saddles now.

I only mentioned Ideal as I had a Ramsay for years that I loved and I know alot of people use them on Welsh, the black country do a few nice show saddles as well.

no worries!😂

i looked at the ray but it’s a rubber inset panel so a no-go:( i do like the ideal ones, black country are absolutely beautiful but i can’t bring myself to part with that much money lol

The black country hartley is a lovely saddle.
I ride my current welshie (who also has a wither) in a black country VSD and it is the most comfy saddle ive ever sat in

@dottylottie - all is not lost - the Ray is also available with a flocked panel now. 🙂

oh really?! i just double checked the website but i didn’t see that! i have to say my favourite is still the davina - i think it’s because the knee roll/“panel” goes all the way up, it’s so satisfying to me over the ones that curve like on the samantha😂

i think the next port of call is to get a master saddler out to look over her current saddle and make a template for me, then get in contact with fylde and have a chat!

thankyou everyone i feel a bit less lost now!

My recommendation would be to find a good fitter first, I've fitted show saddles and natives, there are trees and panel shapes I'd not touch with a bargepole, and would recommend a second hand saddle for those reasons, rather than what you're looking at unless you're very careful and work with a very good fitter. You'll lose less buying a used saddle if your horse changes shape.

I have a second hand WH saddle company saddle and I love mine (also have a Welsh D x with withers!). I actually don’t use a saddle company fitter to adjust mine, you need to ask around but there are fitters that will fit them that are not associated with the saddle company.
