Evening everyone,

I've been with my vets for years now and have always been very happy with them, but recently I'm doubting them a bit as I'm positive there is more they could be doing with one of our horses, and the problem has been going on for ages now and I feel so sorry for the poor thing.

I won't go into details but I'd really appreciate a second opinion on him and was recommended Fyrnwy vets - does anybody use them?

Do they see "every" horse or just competition type horses? (sorry if that's a stupid question!) Poorly neddy is by no means fancy, "just" a little section A, but he's not a happy pony and we're desperate to get him sorted.

I know they have several vets there, do you request a vet or do you get assigned one that is most suited to the problem?
If you request one is there anybody you would particularly recommend?

Also, could somebody please tell me what the call out fee is?

Thank you x

They have been our horsey vet for year and years. Definitely recommend them. They have loads of vets and if it is a second opinion you need, when you phone i would tell them and they may perhaps suggest a vet - they all have specialisms. Of course they do all sorts of neddies! I have 1 or 2 specific vets that i generally have but have seen most of them through emergency callouts....!
Think i usually pay about £50 callout. Dont look to hard :D
I like them also as they have an on site surgery which can sometimes be useful...
My vet is going to be covering the olympics :D

Agree, brilliant vets, think there are now about 8 in the practice and they only do equines so you know you are getting someone that is very experienced; as poster above says, they all have their specialties so tell them the problems when you ring and they'll suggest which vet to use. Really rate them.
Depends how far you are from their office in Baschurch to how much a call out fee is; it's about £35 from there to here which is about 25 miles.

My boy was sent there when he fractured his shoulder he was looking good and recovering well untill a bank holiday sadly he never recived "things" that he needed resulting in me having to have him PTS as the infection had spread to his bone!! Was not the vets fault and could not fault them what so ever with his vet care etc. But sadly things being missed cost me him :( ( not vets fault)

I was charged £1 per mile.

I am afraid I had a bad experience with them - won't go into detail but one of their vets caused my horse to spend 9 days in hospital on a drip, from a very standard procedure. I also think they are very expensive.

Whereabout in Shrops are you? I now use James Bowdler from Church Stretton and swear by him. He is an out and out horseman, has a lovely way with the horses, and is very reasonably priced.

Hi, We used them when our vet moved away for a couple of years and they were "ok" but lacked the personal touch as it was a different vet each time, I thought they were expensive too. If you are in North Shropshire you couldn't do better than Mark Andrews founder of Wrexham Equine Vets very knowledgeable and caring and the other vets he takes on always seem the same we were so glad when he came back to this area, good luck.

Thank you for your (mixed!) opinions everyone, very sorry to hear about your horses Oldenburg27 & sidney :(
May give them a quick call as I'm hoping ponys problems aren't too serious, just would like something to be done about them rather than the vet sympathetically saying "oh dear, it's still going on?" and looking concerned but not actually having any ideas!
Thanks for the other recommendations too, will do a google - though I think Wrexham is probably a bit too far from me unfortunately
Thanks again x

Fyrnwy are a great practice. I have used them for years and have never had any problems. The call out depends on where abouts you are from Baschruch but I have had a shared visit in the past when a vet was seeing a friends horse down the road.
They also have great facilities, one of my horses had surgery and did not have to spend hours on the lorry like some of my friends who use practices that just provide mobile veterinary care - that is the main reason I use them.
All of the vets seem very nice from what I have seen.

Simon? :D

Cannot recommend Fyrnwy enough. Surprised to see that someone else has described them as expensive as they were precisely half the price of our previous vet (also in Shropshire and one to absolutely avoid, hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet).

Agree, have used Fyrnwy for over 20 years, David jagger although semi retired will come out if requested personally, Jim Tipp and Simon I have used in the past 8 or so years, very dedicated and helpful.

NB to the poster above, if you ask for a particular vet they will keep consistency, never had a problem in that department obviously emergency you get the on call vet but they are ALL equine specialists.

Erm, isn't this sort of post a bit unfair - naming a vet and then asking for comments on them ? If I was a vet there, I'd be onto my lawyers PDQ.

I don't see how as poster asked about the practise in general, not a specific vet and even those who had reason to be negative didn't name anyone.

FWIW I've heard that Wrexham are now being very heavy handed with the pen but they continue to be good vets if you're that area.

I have used them for years and years, if you get on with a particular vet there you can request them unless its an emergency where they will send the closest to you at the time (which makes sense with an emergency). I think over the years I have pretty much met them all, although I will ask if my favorite is available for routine visits 3 of their vets know me by name and all my horses names so there is definately a personal touch in my case. As for their charges I think the are about average for a call out charge its £42, just checked last weeks bill.
