I remember someone posting a link to a very interesting web page that identifies problems caused by specific gadgets (ie, draw reins, pessoa, chambon etc).... and vaguely remember it being posted in the comp forum.

Can anyone help me find it?! I'm researching for some work (studying Mctimoney) and have waded through pages of HHO and can't find it....

*le sigh*

Great read, Hate Gadgets, It annoys me soooooo much when loads of people use them at my yard, when they just need to learn to ride better, give the horse/pony a chance and some training and take some time to do the work to get the true results!!! sorry rant over.

they are a rubbish attempt at a short-cut, and i've never yet found a short-cut with horses that actually works. you can kid yourself it's worked, until the chips are down and it matters (usually in a competition!), and that's when the gap in training that the shortcut has attempted to circumvent will show.
pessoas are SO trendy at the moment and it drives me nuts. i've stopped even answering any posts about them though - can't see the point, when so many people have kidded themselves that as long as the horse is going around with his neck bent and his head behind the vertical, everything's perfect.

Exactly, All these people want is for the horse to "look pretty" with its head down without the understanding of why and how, and it takes time, patience and training.

Ok, fair enough, some gagets are misused by people who don't have the skills or understanding to utilise them properly.

But, in educated hands, for the right reasons, some "gagets" are very useful indeed and are not being used to "tie a horse's head down to make it look pretty".

For a horse who has been badly trained or spoiled, a loose Market Harborough or correctly used running reins (i.e. not used to crank the head in, but to prevent the horse from inverting and coming right above the bit), combined with correct riding, can be very beneficial. Not for using for a long period of time, not used "to get the head down". An inverted horse who is hollow and above the bit can also get physical problems from being allowed to go this way.

Ps. I agree with you about the Pessoa.

YES! YES! finally, someone else who thinks what my trainer and i do about the effing pessoa lungeing gadget... "it succeeds in jabbing the horse in the mouth with every push of the hindlegs."
ABSOLUTELY!!!

I love this site- I hate Pessoas, people rely so much on them.

okay, fair enough, i can see that.
my main worry is that for a lot of horses, going inverted and hollow isn't a bad habit designed to p*** the rider off, it is a plain symptom of pain or discomfort somewhere - teeth, saddle, back, poll, whatever. the horse is saying something, very loudly. when you put a gadget on, you stop the horse from expressing himself in that way - except for the very odd horse which will chuck itself on the floor, bolt, continue fighting or whatever, and never give in to the gadget.

I love that site too and I am also not keen on pessoas at all.
I do however rate a chambon very highly.
I have only started twelve horses from scratch so no wealth of experience by any means (plus they weren't quality horses, just nice all rounders) but I lunged every single one on a chambon before they were sat on and later on as well and the results were pretty good.

I wonder if someone has similar experiences with it?

I love chambons though have only ever used one on Sienna as she lacks engagement. Really helps to free her up through her back and swing along. Have never seen the appeal of a pessoa and think they are completely trendy, do think a few people on here have relied on them over the years with adverse effects.......
