I am going to have a rant, hope that's OK :p

Last week I brought a bag of Happy Hoof for near on £12. Today I found mould in it. I checked the best before and it's fine untill September. There were several lumps of bluey dusty mould so I threw 2/3rds of the bag away as I didn't want to risk feeding it to my horse.

Then I opened the brand new bale of shavings I brought from Countrywide today for about £8.30. The whole lot disentigrated into a small pile of dust so bad I couldn't see my hand in front of my face in the stable. Normally these shavings are OK, maybe I just got a duff bag but I am going to have to try and wet it or get them out of the stable as I was coughing in there myself just after a minute.

Then I go to catch my horse in the headcoller I brought last month for £15 which has broken already, he's wearing the rug I brought before christmas that has a tear in it along the shoulder seam and the stuffing is coming out.

I don't know if anyone else finds this but I am just sick and tired of spending a fortune, trying to do the best for my horse and ending up with a pile of cr@p. It seems to me that manufacturers are taking short cuts making products as cheaply as possible and yet the prices keep going up.

What happened to the british manufactured rugs and headcollers that lasted 10 years easily. If anyone is like me you must have some old rug somewhere that is still going strong while all the new ones fall apart.

I literally felt like crying seeing all that horsefeed on the muckheap and then opening that bag of shavings. I feel like trying to keep a horse sometimes is an uphill struggle.I should at least be able to buy something thats worth the money. I don't mind spending the money if the product is decent but it feels as if I should have just chucked that money down the toilet. It's the horse that suffers as well. My poor boy has been eating mould and he may have to sleep on dust tomorrow.

Grrrrrrr don't even get me started on my new shires saddlecloth that shrunk the first time I washed it (in 30 degrees!).

I'm just FED up of being treated like an idiotic bottomless pit of money :(. All I want is the best for my horse, is that to much to ask!!

quality is def slipping down as prices ramped up! annie came with a rambo rug 11yrs ago which she lived in 24/7 when i got her. its lost a clip at the front but apart from that is the only rug to have survived more than 1 winter! mark todd ruined and dont get me started on derby house!!

My coloured cob (missing/stolen) is a rug beater and went thru rugs like hot dinners. One I found the surcingle completely off, then one shoulder shredded and stuffing coming out, then the leg strap was off.He ruined a BN rug, only wore it one full winter and a few weeks this one.Another day I had left a leather head collar on him as I needed to catch him later and when I came back it was off ,Eventually found it on the floor on a tree branch 2 days later.

You should take the mouldy chaff back to the feed store, they should replace it for you FOC. Same with the shavings, with both there may have been a production problem.

Totally agree! Especially on the rug front. Like heresannie, the only rugs still on the go are the Rambos. Everything else breaks within months! It's so soul destroying, especially as the prices keep increasing.

Take it all back & kick off. On the rug front mine is very good with hers, rarely damages them. In 21 years I have only ever bought new rugs cos she grew or when I fancied new design. Friends rug wrecker used two old ones of mine this winter, both done 10+ winters on mine but apart from the odd quick diy repair have survived him pretty much unscathed all winter.

I thought I was imagining it! Quality does seem to have deteriorated in recent years. I'm thinking the answer is to either buy top quality products or else cheap as chips non-horsey items, expect to replace frequently, but probably better quality than cheap horsey things. Feed prices in particular have rocketed up. Mine will be eating oats & bran this winter, I'll bet it won't cost 15 a bag and no molasses so its good for the lami risk.

Take these things back!

Then take some pictures and e mail them to the manufacturers to complain.

Then have a big glass of wine ;)

After being told we were using to much haylage which is included in our diy livery price (we only give them one skinny little haynet a day!) we just bought a round bale of hay from a haylege supplier that was reccommended to us, it turned out brown, is mouldy and stinks, i've got a feeling it's silage! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
