Was just on my way back from the yard when a car and trailer went past....the top door above the front ramp was open, and the big chestnut horse inside was happily stood with his head stuck right out the top

Dont people know how dangerous this is? It's like going along on a train with your head stuck right out the window when another train is coming along....you just wouldnt do it, would you? So why put your horse in the position to do the same thing on the road...and not only put it at risk of having its head taken off by a close-passing lorry or bus, but also leave it open to being smacked in the face by any flying debris/twigs/branches etc that you might drive past. This really is a pet hate of mine

I agree that is really dangerous

My pet hate is when I'm at a show, and people tie their horses / ponies up the trailors and lorries and just leave them. So many times have they nearly kicked our lorry. And so many times I have had to rescue them from either a foot in a haynet, or a foot in a bucket or they have chewed through their lead ropes and had to tie them up again. We always leave our ponies on the lorry, so when it is hot they have shade and when it is cold and wet they have shelter. I would never tie any of mine up and leave them as I do not want responsibilty if they injury anyone and I care about their safety!

Also someone posted on here a month or so ago that it actually invalidated their insurance if they drove like this (so probably would most peoples!)

Apparently the trailer is designed to be stable with the top door shut and if you leave it open and the trailer tips over the insurance company will argue that you were driving "dangerously" i.e. with an knowingly unstable trailer

can i ask... what about those little windows in the side? my YO takes us out in her lorry and the window in my horse's section doesn't shut properly so he travels with his nose out... only his nose, it's only a small window... but i worry that people think it's dangerous...\

When we had our lorry, I always used to open the windows a little bit, but never enough for the horses to get their nose right out - just enough that they could get some air

I think it IS important that fresh air is circulated somehow, but I would not be happy if any part of my horse was actually protruding from the window, if that makes sense? I used to just open it about three inches, and Ellie just rested her nose on the ledge

In the trailer, we just open the vent on the roof. I know some people travel with the rear doors open - and we have sometimes, but I do prefer those to be shut, too!
