massive problem, my four year old 14.2hh gelding has started gettin to strong for me to put into canter, he trys to avoid work by messing with his bit to avoid contact any help appriciated
I am no expert. I would get his teeth checked and make sure the bit has no rough edges (sorry if you have already done this).
I would forget canter and concentrate on working him in trot with lots of changes of pace within the trot and lots of turns circles, serpentines etc to get him listening to you.
Maybe work him in canter on the lunge so it becomes less exciting and also listening to your voice which you can then put to good use when riding.
I know it may sound odd but very often using more leg helps. You want to have him push himself from behind rather than pull himself along from the front end.
My mare could seem to be very strong when she went trot to canter but if I sat up and really used my legs she kept her balance and did not fall onto her forehand with her weight being held up by my shoulders.
oh ok ill try it and ill keep on with the transitions, I dont know if this makes any difference but he isn't strong at all when he is doing a corse of jumps in canter, does that change anything?
