I have a welsh sec D and he is prone to gaining weight during summer time. I have him on a strict diet at the moment, but want a chaff that I can give him for breakfast and evening meals which won't make him gain weight, is there any around? I don't really want to spend absurd amounts of money, but he is looking rather round already!!

Here is a list of the lowest calorie chaffs I have found (the MJDE/kg is the 'calorie count', the lower the number the lower the calories):

Dengie HiFi Good Doer - 7MJDE/kg
Dengie HiFi Lite - 8 MJDE/kg
Spillers Happy Dieter - 7 MJDE/kg
Mollichaff Original, Mollichaff Herbal and Applechaff - 7.5MJDE/kg
Bailey's Golden Chaff - 7 MJDE/kg
Spillers Cool Fibre - 8 MJDE/kg

Fab thanks guys

Hiya, there is also Happy Hoof which is Laminitic trust approved, but I did see someone mention somewhere that it may have a high sugar content but low calorie all the same!
Would also recommend Hifi Lite

I'd recommend Hi Fi Lite too but, in my experience, some horses turn their noses up at it as it looks and smells about as appetising as chopped up front door mats! My Highland x porker used to look at me as if I was trying to poison him and wouldn't touch it. My current Section D veteran, also a good doer, adores Mollichaff Veteran Chaff which is a wee bit lower than Hi Fi Lite in protein and sugar but has added oil which hoiks the calorie count up a bit. Still, my boy is doing brilliantly on it, would eat the whole sack if allowed and the shine on his coat is amazing. Good luck with your ned!
