My little 13.3hh companion mare is currently keeping a pony in his thirties company and I am looking after both of them. Elderly pony (who is very fit and well) needed a new heavyweight turnout so, with the owner's permission, I bought him a new Gallop heavyweight turnout which was on offer at my local feed merchants. Rug seemed really nice and cosy and I didn't expect to use it for some time yet but as it was very wet and windy the other day and his lightweight turnout was leaking, I put the new Gallop rug on him the following day. When I brought them in, I put my hand down the neck of the rug and he was wet, but I thought the heavy rain had just seeped into the neck of the rug but there were also wet bits along some of the seams of the lining. Next day, another wet horrible day, I turned him out in the Gallop rug again, and, when I checked in the evening, the lining was saturated! Feed shop will replace without question (I'm a good customer!!) but now I'm wondering whether perhaps it was wet because he was too hot and sweaty.....or is it leaking???? It was seriously wet.....anyone out there have opinions on Gallop rugs before I return it? It is a heavyweight turnout, no neck cover. Love to hear from you!

I would never buy another gallop rug. Within a week both of the chest buckles had come off due to bad stitching. Could have been a one-off but I would rather be safe than sorry so it is Masta all the way for me now.

I used a Gallop all last winter with no problems.
I think there is a high chance he was sweating. It's still very warm to put on a heavyweight.

Heavy weight in this weather?? Could you not just get a 1200d no fill turnout rug, definitely dont leak or let the wind through and dry when indoors from the horses body heat, just my opinion

Putasocinit, it was actually very cold, wet and windy the other day - I'm not into over-rugging horses - my own are clipped and still living out (NOT over-rugged, which is more than I can say for my liveries' horses, but that's another story, ha a!). The Gallop rug was VERY wet inside and my little companion pony's heavyweight Masta was dry inside and she has spent the last three winters on loan as a companion to someone who didn't believe in rugging, even in the coldest, snowiest of weather, so she should have been the one who over-heated the other day, but didn't!!!

I brought a gallop rug two years ago from a second hand tack shop it cost £3.00. it did need reproofing but it fits nicely and is light weight perfect for early autumn/ late spring.

Really don't like them. Leaks on a rainy day and as stay in Scotland means highly likely to rain!!
Also find the fastenings aren't in the right place.

TequilaMist -so perhaps the old pony's rug is leaking as opposed to him sweating! It really was soaking inside yesterday after a day of heavy showers. Like I said, the feed merchants will change it without question if it's faulty.

I have a 150g Gallop standard neck and never had any problems with it. It is rather on the big side but my mare is fine built, so rugs tend to be too big in the shoulder and the Gallop is no exception. Moderate showers are not a problem and I think its good value for money.

I would think so. I could tell with my one as not just in patches it was wet on inside of rug along the back.Def not sweat!
The belly straps are too far back practically cross over at his willy!! The front velcro bit is also all wrong!!
