anyway she is like your typical cob no wither flat back round
i have just bought a wintec vsd and it just does not fit at all too much height over the wither are
so i am looking for one i think that is designed for a cob so it has a lower pommel arch

i have not heard of gallop saddles before but have seen one designed for cobs so could someone help me out about these

Hello
im my opinion anything 'gallop' is very cheap and very poor quality leather. My mum bought a gallop saddle for her very fat cob type and it just rolled around on her back as she has no wither and it looked ridiculous as the flaps apear to be very short. Plus it looked awful and was like sitting on a lump of concrete i would not buy one. The wintec saddles are very good as you can change the gullet width. They are just velco - ed in and are very east to change. Have you tried a wide or x wide gullet, they are fairly cheap to pick up on ebay. If all else fails i think thorogood sell a T9 saddle or something like that made for chunky no wither horses. Hope this helps.

I've only ever come across one - and it was horrible. Our coloured cob arrived with it and both she and my OH found it to be the most uncomfortable thing in the world. Hubby said it was uncomfortable to ride in - and every time he so much as shifted his weight in the saddle, the mare would take off with him - so I guess she thought it was uncomfortable too!!!

Why not get a saddler down so you can try a few wide types in various makes as they all differ.

A Thorowgood is not guaranteed to fit neither no matter which gullet you put in (some of the TG cob saddles don't have changeable gullets) but is certainly a good saddle to try should you have select the correct size, but if you have one to get rid of it might be better trying a few, finding one that fits then part exchanging it for the one you have?

It's false economy to buy any of the Indian made saddles like Gallop for instance, it usually means trouble further down the line and even more expense.

I unwittingly bought a new Gallop bridle off e-bay once. Having seen that I would not be buying one of their saddles. I threw the reins away as in my opinion they were such poor quality leather they would be dangerous to use. I never used the bridle either as although it was meant to be cob size, was very small indeed.

I have a Thorowgood T4 cob saddle (the old model with the 'Fish' inserts) that I used to use on my little chunky chap when I first got him. This used to sit on him really well and was not uncomfortable to ride in. I used it on and off for a long time, until I found a leather one that actually fitted.

Hi,

Sorry can't comment about the gallop saddles, but i have a wintec WIDE saddle for my haflinger who has flat back and no wither and it fits him lovely. There is a lot of difference bewteen the normal wintecs even though you can put a wide gullet in them and the wintec wide saddle which is desinged for cobs. I tried the thorowgood but didnt like it.

hi perhaps i just got the wrong one wintec then i went for the vsd as she has huge shoulder i have always had dressage saddles on her due to this and her deep body as the gp saddles do look a bit like a mini skirt on her as she is also 16.2
thanks for your comment

This. Why not try a Maxam saddle (providing it is fitted by a saddle fitter)? They are quite cheap now and are a good first saddle to try. Saying that, if you are on eBay at the right time you can pick up synthetic saddles reasonably cheap now.
Wouldn't touch anything by Gallop with a bargepole (and I am a known cheapskate! ;) )

Saddle Company saddles are good for flat backed cob types I believe, as are Balance saddles. Wintec saddles are okay but some of them have a banana shaped tree which won't work with the shape of your horses back.

Re the Gallop saddles don't touch them with a bargepole, yours or anyone elses. Disgusting planks of wood which should never be seen near a horses back.

I was also going to suggest saddle company - so long as you find a good fitter. They are adjustable. That or Thorowgood. I would never buy a cheap saddle like Gallop. Far better with a good second hand one. I use saddle company myself and really rate them as saddles - they are made in Walsall and English leather. But, like any saddle, they won't suit every Horse.

I think the Maxam saddles are Thorowgoods are'nt they? They were cheaper than the one I have and there is a 'cob' style in the range. They also used to come with the 'fish' inserts so maybe, if they are still made by Thorowgood, they now have the adjustable plates.

Don't know anything about Gallop saddles though.

This, go if money is tight or you don't want to be spending alot whilst the horse is young and changing shape etc, go for a good synthetic brand like thorowgood or wintec.

Ditto the streer clear of Gallop saddles: they are truely appaling

It might be worth forking out a little more and getting a slightly newer thorowgood saddle. The Cob saddle is usually a good fit on most horses (not all obviously) and the newer ones have a changable gullet so a) will fit as she changes shape (within reason) and b) are much easier to sell on.

You could pick a second hand T4 up from ebay for not much more than 200 (but be careful it's the newer version with the changable gullets as the slightly older versions don't have them)

God, I got conned by one of these on Ebay about 8 years ago, in the pic it looked dressage cut with nice thigh and knee rolls; when it arrived it had a tiny seat, even though it was supposed to be 17", and it was actually forward cut - in the pic they had tilted it forward to look longer cut. Imagine trying to ride in it - the knee rolls were totally in the wrong place.

I tried it on once, took it straight off, and it has languished in the depths of my tackroom since then - I'm too embarrassed even to put it back on Ebay!

Wintecs are no good at all for cobs or flat backed warmbloods. You can get the Wintec wide whichis better but still I would not recommend them. The best saddles I have come across for cobs are Pessoa (wide tree), especially the Blythe Tait model. You can pick them up second hand on ebay.
