So.... Tap took off with me in the middle of field last week. Was flat out, head down with no control and no brakes. I'm not the most experienced or knowledgeable rider but even I know its not good for an ex racer to bolt through a field at (almost) full pelt (yes, I don't believe he was going his fastest!!)
I feel terrible as I couldn't control/stop him and had to pretty much tag along for the rollercoater until the end of the field. In retrospect, could've prevented it, but he tripped going into the field so I let the reins fall forward for his head, before I could gather myself up he was already at a progressivley quickening canter.
Now Tap is a 16.3, extremely strong TB.
I will be ready for him next time and will prevent it, just sooooo damn angry at myself!!! It hasn't done him any good, he's gone back to his jiggy, joggy excitable racey days ways!! Back to sqaure one....

Oh dear...lets hope he soon calms back down for you! If not looks like you will be having a few nice gallops around the fields.

He's my mums, had him for about a year now, he's fab really and it was my fault for not being on the ball enough!! he's so quick, he can spin on a sixpence and smash the speed of sound!! But I love him to bits and wouldn't change him. He's the gentlest giant and I know he would never hurt me. He's loads better than he used to be, has come a long way. He'll be back to normal soon!!

Always scary when they take off with you! glad youre both OK.
I used to ride an ex racehorse who came out of racing because he bolted on the gallops and the track (I found this out later) The only sure way of stopping him was to slowly pull him in on one rein...something that you had to obviously judge carefully because of balance, but it was very effective and better than hawing after pull/give pull/give failed. Like yours, apart from his sudden take offs, (which he grew out of after a year or so) he was a total sweetie with impeccable manners.

My mum rode an ex racer quite a few years ago, he did the same thing, ended up jumping a ditch at the end of the field. What nobody had told her was that he had been taught to go faster if you pulled on the reins!?! So how on earth they got this out of him I don't know!

This is very bizarre.

Recognise the horse in your avatar as one I'd seen advertised and I was very interested. Left a message with someone but the seller never got back in touch.

Were you selling the horse in your avatar?
