Im going to the gallops to give my TB a good run, but hes not been for a long canter for a while he had a few short runs on Sunday but ground was a little unlevel and didnt want to risk him.

So i have well fitting tack, a breastplate and good set of boots-have you any recommendations of anything else i should take??

yup pretty fit, although even though i havent done alot of fast work he can do 30 mins continous schooling or a 1 15min hack with short canters and not get hot/puffed out.

it depends how fast you expect him to go, if you are really expect to get him flat out then he may not be fit enough, but at a decent half speed he should be fine,

most horses don't ever use more than 1st or second gear, despite us 'thinking' we are going flat out

no, i just want to go a decent speed to get some cobwebs gone. I dont consider myslef as totally irresponsible and would never risk him without proper training just to have a go at a flat out gallop!!

Thanks for your reply. i guess once again i worded my title of my post wrongly.

I'm sure you'll be fine. After all, I'm sure you won't be galloping for miles and it'll do him good to let off some steam. I let PF gallop on hacks every now and then, although I actually find it a bit scary!

PF you are a breath of fresh air!

Im sure i'll be a bit scared too as N's fastish canters are not too far away from my previous horse (patches') gallop speed!! Bless her! As someone suggested earlier to i am going to take my body protector-better safe than sorry!! esp as i recently fell off him and it HURT!

go enjoy yourself. i take my stroppy mare for gallop's along the beach quite a lot. even better now that the times have been taken off. can go when i want. we always feel better for it. have fun!

I regularly gallop both my veterans who are in their early twenties, I let them have a blast and they come back to me when they are ready, I never push them. They actually use more energy and effort if I try to canter them as they are both very highly strung and will fight me all the way ... Your TB is more than capable of having a gallop so go for it!
