I was just wondering, do some horses just not fully open up into a gallop?

I took Roo yesterday to have our first ever gallop, when I got down to the stubble field I felt more then slightly nervous but I knew she would look after me. So we went into gallop but I could tell that she 'could' go faster.
I really enjoyed it though :D Good girl she is :)

I would definately say that horses have a '5 gear' that only gets used once in a while!

I have a throughbred and have only ever felt his true speed and power a handful of times, I was actually quite shocked when i found it! Its a fantasic feeling when they are going power ahead, definately blows the cobwebs away! :)

I usually have to encourage him to do it flat out. Usually it's just like a fast canter lol. He's quite lazy mind! I love to gallop - only had my first one last year and I've been riding for 17 years lol :)

my pony goes best when there is someone bigger and faster in front :p but he usually will go if i ask him to as long as its not down hill - he doesnt like that

My pony and me have our first 5th gear moment as soon as our first stubble field of the year has been cut :). We tend to start with a nice medium canter and after we've gone for about 5 to 8 strides he'll move up a gear unless I ask him not to. (Very rarely! I'm a sucker for a stubble field and a gallop!)

You'll know when you're in 5th gear as you feel the horse almost lift from underneath you. Their stride totally opens out and you'll feel how exhilarating and powerful the horse feels as they move. The wind will almost burn your face and your eyes will stream with tears once you truly have that 5th gear. Don't be afraid to ask for it because not all horses automatically move up a gear - some do require a little persuasion but a little nudge is usually all thats required.

IMO its the best feeling in the world :).

Ditto this. Each time it feels more awesome! We always manage to turn it up a notch each time too, somehow! Blew my hat clean off my head last night....LOL. Oops.

Haha yes kenzo :D I can't wait now
I might steal the goggles though :p

I'll let you go first then on the open stretches, she's got the speed but not the brains :D god help me (or should I say us) should a bird fly out of a bush (there's a lot of bushes :D) and all those monsters pretending to be XC jumps, it will be an interesting ride my dear, don't forget to wear your sticky bum jods!

I may have pump myself up with some of Mackenzie's valerian, I get a bit too over excited on a XC course, every jumps is followed by a ''whooo hoooo'' and Mary King 'Glory Thrust' of the Fist into the air :D

I LOVE feeling Ayla go up a gear! I tested it out the other day across the old railway line and she really flies, I normally keep her nice and collected and ask her to listen and not try and play races with the horses in front, on Monday though i kept her collected for half of the way and then just let her go....amazing!!!:D

oooh...where are you going on saturday? Anywhere near me?

I cant let my boy gallop... :( The poor thing if he goes too fast he looses control of his legs and falls over :o

I am hoping by next spring with all the work I have put into him and the muscle building up then we will be able to, but still have the issues of everything trying to eat him. Wonder how fast horses can gallop sideways and back ways...

Not this Saturday but the 18th were going XC schooling at Manor.

PS. your more than welcome to join us there, more the merrier!

My 5 year olds just found his 5th gear...... and has forgotten the 4th:rolleyes:

He loves going for a good old run with me, but now when I ask for canter I get GALLOP MUM, GALLOP!!!!! He's a good lad and I can get him to come down to canter, but it's just so fun to have a run with mum!! (Must admit I do like it when we get going, so does my little dog means she can go fast to :D)

Thanks everyone, I'll try again in a few days or something :)

Fingers crossed he'll be able to again :), I'd pay to watch a horse galloping backwards haha

Once a horse learns to go fast, they like it :p lol, good luck keeping the canters :)

Nothing actually worng with him he's just a bit dim tbh! ;) Tends to flail his legs widley in excitment and I think just to being a little weak in his muscles (dont think it helps that he thinks he's back playing polo when we gallop), though I do think galloping backwards will be better than galloping forwards as we've already perfected trotting backwards

Bless him though, since we've been having regular lessons his whole way of going is improving so I do belive we will be able to go farward in all gaits in a fashionable manner one day... :o:D

Manor Grange?

I think OH's mare would huff 'n' puff and grind to a half...and I would look a bit dim on a 13.3hh Highland next to you two.

Anyway- I am off to look at a horse tomorrow...a very green, young arab. Yes, I am that stupid:D

Have a lovely time....next time I might inflict myself upon you:D

Our horses aren't big :D
Anyway it would add to the humour of the day :p
I think I'm going to laugh at Kenzo's fist in the air after each jump lol

Good luck with the arab, rather you then me :D

:D so looking forward to seeing RG's face in photos:p

It will vary in colour but I shall make sure that RubysGold's face remains in tact and full working order.

However I shall riding a skitty TB mare who jumps at her own shadow or freaks out should a blade of grass be a differnt shade of green to the rest and goes round with her head in clouds.

I'd be more worried about my face. :D

Me to took my TB to the gallops and it was quite difficult to stop I had to slow him down slowly! It was amazing he could have gone faster but there wasnt enough room as it was only a small one! Definatley blew the cobwebs away! Loved it|!

You have a Highland, perfect.

Means you can go through the jumps rather than over them, then we can follow through space you have created for us.

I like it.

Please come!

:D

Don't worry about being vertically challanged, I been offered a 14.1 cob to take .....should I need to call the TB Injury Hotline.

It's short, it's round and fat but it can jump! :D

Haha if you bring the super jumping cob, then the day will be even more eventful as there'll be no stopping you haha
She knows she wants to come! :D Lol, drag her out
