Galloping

I rarely gallop my horses out hacking - although once in a while I let them have a good run - but it's mainly due to the fact that we are stabled in an urban area and they aren't many suitable places!

We are so lucky to be near the downs. I would only gallop if the ground was good and it usually is up there so we have a good blast

...but my old girl was a totally different kettle of fish

One persons idea of galloping can be so different from anothers

I used to hack out with a girl and her lovely cob. We'd be going down a track and she'd just go into gallop, shouting and laughing that she couldn't stop and off she'd go, so I'd follow at her cobs 'gallop' pace. I got fed up with her just going off with no warning so one day I did as she did, said lets gallop and gave M her head. Bear in mind M was a super turbo charged TB with oodles of gearsHEHEHE , well we eventually pulled up and waited for the OP. Her face was a picture and she never tried her funny little 'trick' agaIN lol

Would be seriously annoyed if someone just galloped off, it's very inconsiderate.
We have a couple of fields that are big enough to gallop up, Fudge doesn't get over excited so he's fine galloping when out in company, we have a couple of horses at the yard who bolt so I avoid galloping when out with them.
Lady gets too over excited galloping in company so we only ever gallop when we're on our own, she has the funniest pony gallop, it always makes me laugh.

I wouldn't say I gallop a lot. We have a couple of fields that are big enough to gallop up, Fudge doesn't get over excited so he's fine galloping when out in company, we have a couple of horses at the yard who bolt so I avoid galloping when out with them.

There was a girl at my old yard who did that a few times when out with Ty. You shouldn't gallop/canter unannounced and I think it's bad manners to overtake unless you don't have any brakes!

I don't gallop as I am a woose plain and simple!!

Saying that we did gallop on sunday, but I think I was less scared as it was on grass next to a private road, so if he had just gone off on one I think my brain associated the tarmac with getting him to stop.

I am still scared of open fields though, but I did have an fall in a big open field and broke my ankle as he wouldn't stop.

I may almost be converted though as I had forgotten how fab it feels! I just don't want him to get too used to it as he does remember things and when i had him at home and used to canter up the hill he got so used to it he would just bolt up there with me.

When conditions are right, enough space and no one in the way, I love a gallop.

Cairo galloped home the other day - we both came in hot heaving hairy messes - and very happy grins - what fun - it was perfect.

Hopefully in years to come will be able to do the same with Chancer - think he will be the sort to enjoy a good blast.

once we were riding bareback to the field and the girl in front decided to gallop off up the grass verge. i had no chance! my pony galloped off after it, spooked at a grit bin and i fell off face down in the tarmac1 bloody nose ouch xxx

We never truely gallop ours, we have seen too many competition horses recked by it, we let them gallop, but under full control and not as fast as they can go. It is so easy for them to overreach or put a foot down a hole, and if that does not blow them their brains go mad, and they can not cope with doing a dressage test in a field.

can't remember the last time I galloped...in fact can't remember the last time I trotted!!I tend to walk mainly and have the odd canter sometimes but not always. This is not because I'm scared its because I love ambling about..

Don't agree - I agree that galloping all the time gives you problems but not every now and again......all work and no play makes Ty a dull boy!

love going for a gallop, but cant do it all the time do to she becomes a pain, and as she belongs to a riding school they want to use her for hacking and once you say go she does indeed go.!

I think possably as ours our mainly driven and driven horses dont canter as much they find even cantering very exiteing, i can see galloping is fun i have often done it on others horses( with permission obviously) but i wouldnt want the risk of them going even slightly lame, that would be their coreer over

Ahh now that makes more sense!

We gallop ours - but we're lucky and have a lake beach close by with a mile straight of sand. Down by the water the ground is perfect for galloping!

Ohhh i love to gallop its my favorite past time! There is only 1 other at my yard that will tho the othere never take their horses off road due to nerves and not feeling in control.

I usually gallop my horse in the sames places as that wher ei can but she will walk if i ask her to walk for do a slow canter if i ask her to of stop and halt for the others to catch up like the other week if need be.

I do actually have some clips of my galloping

This is a pic

Love it.....but only recently comfortably with galloping my boy...took me a while to establish where the brakes were....who was in charge & that he's not actually a racehorse (which was apparently news to Sid!)....we're not great in company so lately have been working on making him canter a sedate lap behind another horse....rather than letting him flatten out at full steam

Have to admit there's no high like it!!

I used to petrified to try it but once I did I love it now.

It can still be a bit hairaising as Bert too has the turbo button and really gives it his all but unfortunately we lack brakes in areas he knows.

I makes sure we use a variety or areas and walk, trot, canter where we gallop to make sure he doesn't take off with me. We are currently trying a variety of bits to improve braking but he runs out of puff quite easily so after a little while he is more than happy to come back down a gear.

i do sometimes but he is rather forward & the brakes can fail every now & then

i do not gallop with others as 1 most of the horses on my yard are unfit, 2, the owners don't like to gallop as they struggle to control the horses.

best part of galloping....you go from canter to a slow gallop then all of a sudden turbo boost kicks in (always get caught off guard by this as we don't always get that) !

I gallop quite a lot, unless im out with people who dont want to. A few of my friends dont gallop but they have good reasons. One has a 4yo that has only been broken a few months and she wants her schooled and accepting the bit before she gallops her. Another has got a 6yo who is basically being restarted, so same reason. The last one has a warmblood who is very well schooled and responsive, yet seems to forget everything shes been taught as soon as you gallop her.
Other than that though, we gallop wherever there is space and good ground to. We live in the New Forest so theres TONNES of places to gallop. We take off without warning as well, it all adds to the fun. And we overtake each other, its good practice for the point to point races at boxing day.
