What should I expect? And how long should I be there? How many circuits do I do? And at what pace? And what do I need to think of? Sports boots and over reaches ok?

Ex racehorse so I'm sure he will want to go quite fast!

Less is more. Never gallop flat out .3/4 pace only .On the bridle. No more than 5 furlongs (1000M). A good walk back and then again. Too many horses get broken down on the gallops by over work and too fast.

Hold on tight!! :D

I'd walk the first circuit, trot the next and then test it out slowly to make sure you have brakes. And ease into a fast canter/ steady gallop.
Think how trainers start breezing them at the start of building them up, rather than race mindset.

Boot up as you see suitable and for what he would usually wear for XC/open field work.

Circular gallops? Steadier and for how long depends on the fitness of your horse.
We go to the gallops often 6 furlong and my daughters pony when fairly fit would do two fairly easily. Steady first then pushed on a bit second. Once is enough for my own horse... Bless ;)
It's great fun!

Really helpful! Thanks

It's for finesses and muscle building. I have some decent canter fields at yard but no slopes for hill work/ muscle building
