When we purchased my daughters pony we were told she had had a tooth removed and we just needed to syringe some water into the gap every three mo ths or so to clear it out. When we had her teeth done in October we were told there was no way we would reach the gap ourselves as it was too far back in the mouth. When her teeth were done the gap got flushed and lits of compacted food was in it, she must if felt so much better as she was much happier when being ridden.
She is now starting to look uncomfortable again and it must need doing again. Does any one know if this is somthing I could do myslef as its just water flushing the gap out or of a way to help the issue of food getting compacted so we can get her teeth done every 6 months instead of what I think will need to be every 2/3 to have it flushed.

If she will tolerate it you could hose her mouth out.

I'd get the vet or whoever attends to point the location out to you, with a big syringe you should manage to aim close enough to clear it out I'd have thought.

They did show me where it is and it is at the bottom and at the back of the mouth. I think a hose would work if she likes it. I remember my childhood pony used to love drinking from the hose. Only problem is we have no mains water so would have to walk her to my house to try it. When her teeth wer done sge had some kind if stalk in it bless her so really want to try to get to it. Maybe the syringe I have tried with isnt big enough? I will have a search on the internet. Thanks.

Maybe speak to your vet, they may let you borrow the practice gag for a few hours to do it, so you can see/feel what your doing. I'm not sure stringing would work if you can't get the syringe in the right place without getting your arm chomped off!

Get a flushing gun which are for drenching cattle, very long nozzle on them. I use one to flush out my horses mouth daily, she has diastema's.

Thanks I will have a search on eBay for a bigger syringe and drencher gun. I should think the drencher gun would be good. Is there any where else that may sell them other than eBay?

I have one of these. It is used by EDT to flush the mouth out.

http://www.equinebladesdirect.com/product.aspx?subcatid=15 The 250ml dose syringe.

I use warm weak Listerine cool or fresh mint to keep the mouth fresh.

Another thing you can use is a garden spray ,which you can get from B&Q. Like the Irrigation Pack from equine blade direct (as above)

You need to flush the mouth out as often as you can. We do it after every feed.

Thank you that looks great for the job. She isnt keen on having any one near her mouth but think she will get used to it if we do it regularly.
