Hi all Ive always fed garlic powder but after reading a few posts here lately have seen there are a lot of reasons why people may not. Who of u uses garlic and have u ever had problems and those who don't why not ? Thanks
Also on a ps. Is there any benefits to be had from feeding peppermint? Thanks

I stopped feeding garlic once I'd singled it out as the thing that made my mare lose condition and become lethargic, I haven't fed it since.
Mint is good for the digestive system, I drink mint tea for my IBS.

I've fed garlic granules for many years with no problems. I had no idea it was supposed to be anything other than beneficial until very recently! But I am very satisfied with our ponies health and condition, so on balance I will continue. If it ain't broke...

Short term proven to boost immunity, long term proven to cause problems.

So yes it is safe if used for SHORT periods as a complimentary boost to help the horse.

I used to until my vet told me it could cause anemia so I stopped. It was also suggested it could have been part of the cause of my old mares footiness, but I don't know for sure on that one.

It's irritating to the stomach and was one of the things on the list of no nos that i got from the vet when I came across my first horse with diagnosed ulcers .
I also believe much garlic is grown in China and that there is a issue of the risk it is grown on contaminated land as a bulb it's particularily prone to picking up contaminates so I avoided it already.

It has been liked to skin problems/thinning of the skin. I stopped feeding it because my horse has very sensitive skin and chronic mudfever.

The benefits are liked to the respiratory system AFAIK.

Hi, I missed the other garlic posts, can someone provide links or links to where you have read that it is bad? Thanks.

I too would like some links to the evidence that garlic is detrimental, as asserted by some posters?
My own anecdotal experience is that my ponies are healthy, long lived, ulcer free and used garlic for decades! I may just be lucky, but I'd like some good proof that what I've been doing is wrong...
