Hello

My ex racer had gastric ulcers about 12 months ago, confirmed by scoping, was treated with omoprozole and sufrulcate powder, rescoped and all good. About 2 months ago after treatment for cellulitis and lots of antibiotics he showed signs of the ulcers returning, had him scoped again, and yes he had them. Same treatment again and rescoped, and all cleared up.

My vet recomended pronutrin as a feed additive for maintenance, but at 77 pounds every 14 days, i wondered if anyone else had any oppinions on what has worked for them.

In the future i now know to protect his belly if he goes on other medication, i should have thought about it really, as i myself has to do this, but my vet never recomended it when he had cellulitis so i just went on their advice.

Be good to see peoples oppinions.

Best Regards

Just some ideas, protexin, Ron fields supplements, Trinity consultants. I'm sure someone with more experience will come along with more specific advice, but given you some ideas

Having tried quite a few off the shelf products, lots of them measured up about the same or pretty close to the Pronutrin in cost. Cheaper alternatives would be aloe Vera juice, slippery elm (Yea Sacc), brewers yeast. My vet also recommended corn oil during my horse’s treatment which I’ve continued with- it’s cheap and he looks beautifully glossy on it. I use Gastrokind at the vets advice, though around £70/ month.
Radiance gold was developed as a gastric maintenance supplement for racehorses (I know the owner). It has lots of happy shoppers, though not sure how the cost compares.

ETA: protexin ‘kwik fix’ is the syringe product you can use with medication or worming to protect the gut. It’s cheap and I’ve used it during unsettled moments/ yard moves etc.
