Gastric Ulcers - advice on treatment

Our 27 year old mare has been showing signs of gastric ulcers. Our vet is up on Friday and going to discuss with him re endescope. Our issue is that due to age she is not insured and gastrogard which through research seems to be the main treatment is so expensive. We have done some research and have found some other solutions but very confused about different options available. Can anyone give us their experience of this issue and what treatment they gave. Hi Ching. A top notch and reasonably priced alternative is Coligone. It is produced specifically for stressy neds, colicky neds, neds with gastric ulcers. It is commonly prescribed by vets too. In fact, you'd be surprised how many neds with low grade and ill-defined health problems benefit by a course of Coligone. And no, I don't work for the company but after a scary bout of gassy colic, my horse now has a 3-day course whenever he changes fields or has anything out of the ordinary happening in his life. Also, there are a few horses on our yard who have (and still are) settled happily and become their own sweet selves again after a course of Coligone.

My only concern Ching is that at 27 your ned may have more problems than "just" gastric ulcers. Has she had them before or is this a first bout ever? I'd be guided by the vet and see what the endoscope shows.

Hi Ching - am going through this at the mo with a pony, and am also uninsured. However, if it IS Ulcers, then Gastrogard really is the only effective way to heal them. However, the dosage is not as high as it used to be as they have experimented with lower doses, and found them to be adequate.
One tip though - you can shop around on the internet for Gastrogard and make a HUGE saving.

Vet has to give you a prescription (which they will probs charge for - in my case 15 pounds) but I saved about 250 pounds! Vet not v. pleased, but I couldn't overlook that sort of saving. Mine came from Pet Drugs Online but there are others.

Gastroguard is, I believe, the only thing clinically proven to actually heal up ulcers.
Other supplements can prevent them occuring, re-occuring or getting worse but may not clear up current ulcers

U guard was recommended by one of the forum users. This appears to be much cheaper than Gastroguard.
 
I've been treating my boy with global herbs acid-x, and I have to say that the difference in him is phenomenal, I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
 
My old girl had a three week course (this time last year) of gastroguard which worked on a sliding scale, so by end of week 3 she was on a quarter of a syringe per day. She is a 16.1 ID/TB cross so quite a good weight. The ulcers were brought on we think by using a daily bute as she suffers with arthritus. The results were fantastic in a very short space of time. IMO it was very good value for money, no additional treatment required since however we also changed her off traditional bute to danilion.
