Gastric ulcers - anyone know where to buy omeprazole without prescription?

This!! The linked company are perfectly legit, and it can mean the difference between no treatment and treatment to un-insured horses!

Im not saying the company isnt legit, in the usa you can buy many drugs over the counter you cant get here, so they arent breaking the law, but you are if you bring them into or accept delivery of them into the country, but hey, you pay your money and take your chance.but be aware it is strictly illeagal to import drugs from abroad you could be buying and giving anything to your horse, and you can be heavily fined or jailed if prosecuted, then try to get a job with drug smuggling on your employment checks

I think she had that the first time. Will look into it, thanks.

Rantacidine is not long acting like O. So you would need to administer Rantacidine every 4 hours throughout the night too to have the same effect

Maybe helpful if the ulcers are very low grade.

My vet worked in the USA and she prescribed Sucralfate or Antepsin along with the GG as she found this had better results and the Antepsin /Sucralfate act as a soother or bandage to the ulcer whilst it heals bringing relief.

If you go onto using GG or O then PM me as the undigested food kills off the hindgut fauna (this happens within 24 hrs of using GG) and this needs to be rebalanced (by giving green clay and chlorella) once treatment is over to ensure good gut health. I have recommended this on a few threads.

Thanks. Where do you get green clay and chlorella?

Buy from the USA yes it's illegal but for the amount you require it would just be taken off you by customs to be prosecuted it needs to be large amounts being sold on. Learnt this watching the custom shows on Sky TV.

I know various folks who successfully buy from USA, but max $100 at a time.

Tell them to get it from there - powder form as my vet said tablets not as effective.

Whether youre prosecuted is at their discretion, a small amount isnt a guarentee that you wont be, you really need to look closely at the risk and what the real cost might be

Good old ebay does both. The green clay is inexpensive but you must buy the ingestible grade.

She has ordered the syringes so more than $100 and put my name and address on because horse is here. But it's only enough for five weeks' treatment for one horse.

Well I hope not as she has used my name! :o

Just talking to my EDT, who used to know an old trainer's head lad - they gave a decent scoop of bicarb in every horse's feed as a matter of routine for years and had happy healthy racehorses (the highest risk factor for ulcers, with stress and empty stomachs). Worth a try and also the cattle people are waking up to activated charcoal to mop up toxins in the gut - another one to try.
Both of these might be maintenance treatments but they could also help healing of exisitng ulcers as the acid environment is neutralised to a great extent?

Might be a long shot but could you ask GP to prescribe a private script for yourself if explained the circumstance?? Private script is about £12 & then you pay for the tablets at cost from chemist (may be a slighty "dodgy" way of getting them but perhaps another option??)
I have bought drugs from the US before both in person visiting & online, never had an issue.

Really sorry but am a Dr and please please please do not use an appointment slot to ask for a private prescription for your horse. It wouldn't be an appropriate/ethical/sensible thing to do and appointment slots are at a premium.
I'mm sure the US company is 'legit' but how 'legit' can it be to happily take your money and send you things that could land you in trouble?

Surely the human dose would not be sufficient to make any difference to the horse like most things they would need a much higher strength.

some people have given advice without knowing al the facts:
The company in USA are acting legally and selling in America
The purchaser in the UK is the one acting illegally (ie. you) in ordering and importing a Prescription only medication with out a prescription
Human grade omeparzole is not legal for use in horses as there is a licenced alternative - gastroguard.
Gastroguard is expensive yes but it is specially formulated to treat stomach and hind gut ulcers ,which many others are not!

there needs to be a major change in managment if this horse continues to show GUS, it is no good to just continue treating this horse if the ulcers continue to return in such a short time. The horse needs a change in life style - for some this can end up being retirement.

Really interesting post. My problem horse is uninsured and I'd bet alot of money has ulcers so off to google.

If anyone is going to Spain though, you can get pretty much anything without perscription there, you'd just have to find out the name. This includes strong antibiotics like penicillin and tetracycline amongst others. Not great for the resistance problem but realise loads of people weekend in places like Barcelona.

I came back through customs with a whole suitcase full of various stuff this year and no-one in either of the 3 airports batted an eyelid, literally 20 boxes of various things. Worth a look if anyone's out there this weekend.

Google 'abler omeprazole' and should give you the link to an american site where can get it very reasonably priced.

I can vouch for this site being totally legit, and many people (inc some on here) that have used it successfully.

Won't give anymore details as know some people get antsy about it as not through the vet etc but if want anymore details feel free to PM me.

I have ordered from this site too. I spoke to a very helpful person in their customer service department before purchasing and received the sachets in about 7 days. It successfully treated the ulcers and had exactly the same ingredients in it as GastroGuard.

not read all the posts as i really cba

i imported in from america..........do it in small doses and if you get cuaght then its not a lot to loose

its about £90 i think? for a 3 month course

pm me if you want to know where i got it from

She is not going to order human omeprazole now. It was just a longshot really.

Surely the human dose would not be sufficient to make any difference to the horse like most things they would need a much higher strength.

Yes, a horse would need ten capsules of the human dose a day.

She was starved at her last livery. Owner left her on full livery whilst she had a knee operation. She went to see her but did not remove rugs etc for 6 weeks, thinking livery were taking good care. When owner's knee healed and she removed rugs, the mare was emaciated. She came to me after she had had a summer on grass and was in good condition, but has always been fractious to ride. This got worse and worse and that is when we discovered she had ulcers. She has been ulcer free for nearly two years until now. We think having a very large foal and going through the weaning process is what has sparked off the ulcers again. The problem has been that due to cost, the owner has not put her on gastroguard for long enough each time (she needs 6 weeks to cure them) so she gets nearly better and then relapses. If she can have a six week course again we should be able to keep her ulcer free, hopefully.

Blimey. I bet it was nerve wracking though.

Thank you. I will bear this in mind should she need to order any more. She has already placed an order for the syringes from ablers.com.

Actually Wagtail it wasn't at all nerve wracking as I hadn't read this post then and didn't even dream that what I was doing could be illegal. Presumed as EU then all legit. Not at all sure that this is not actually the case....all for personal use obviously......

have also used abler.com for several repeat bulk buys and never had a problem.

have been told not illegal if not buying to sell on and have never had a packet seized at customs.

Thank you. It is a worry, but I can't see why customs would waste money prosecuting people for buying a harmless drug for one horse. Especially as there would be proof that the horse needs it and has been treated with the equivalent in the past.

It does make me cross just how expensive gastroguard is. Owner has had it paid for on insurance (£2250 worth) and already paid £1000 out of her own pocket for it, so I think the makers of gastroguard have certainly had their money's worth from her already.

This was my understanding of it as well.

I think its disgusting they think they can justify the prices that they charge

I know its horrendously expensive. Personally I'd rather do it that way than run the risk of doing something illegal. Maybe it might be worth checking with customs or someone to see what the official stance on it is, not just hearsay on here?

I'm confused. It is legal for vet to write you a prescription and for you to go off with it and order online or from another vet if its cheaper, they are allowed a small admin charge for this. How is it different to buying from the US? If customs have a problems you have the prescription.
Would you need to post prescription to US and have the drugs posted with the prescription in the box back to you? Surely this would be legal.
