I was wondering if anyone may be able to help. My horse has been diagnosed with grade2/3 gastric ulcers. He has just started a course of Gastroguard for 4 weeks and then will be re-scoped for the all clear. We have changed his diet, low starch and carb, high protein/oils and ad lib hay and access to good grazing. However I am interested if anyone has any preferences or experiences with either Coligone or U-Guard as a supplement to help prevent a reoccurence?

My friends horse was managed entirely by diet when it was discovered that they had ulcers.

Like you, low starch and carb, oil and ad lib hay, plus the grazing. The horse made a complete recovery within a very short period of time, and has had no re-occurance.

The symptoms he had having been going on for ages - minor colic bouts (always oddly enough 20-28 days after equest, which is apparently too strong for his gut), loss of appetite, swollen tummy, he also had a low white blood cell count which also showed he was loosing protein. Other horses are meant to get quite anxious. Also cribbing/strange tongue habits are also common as they are trying to create saliva to neutralise the acid in their tummies. Not sure if this helps!!

Thanks for that, I don't think it's what my horse has then, although I have been recommended Coligone, I ordered some yesterday and can't wait to try it.

My horse is very very grumpy and evil, really tucked up and is losing weight, he hates being touched on his tummy and will kick out even with the lightest touch. He hates being girthed up and just looks like a very uncomfortable horse. He has loads of energy and lately has become a handful to ride, jogging everywhere and going sideways etc. He has been bucking a lot too and today wouldn't let me get on, when I did he napped and reared and didn't want to leave the yard. This is very unlike him!

Like I say I'm waiting for my Coligone to arrive and I'm really hoping it's going to help.

My horse is grumpy and evil, and hates having her girth done up or a rug put on, and bucks a lot, but doesn't have classic symptoms of ulcers, but from my vet seeing her behave in the way she does he thinks it's highly likily she has them, so i'm getting her checked out to be sure. If your worried speak to your vet, as each horse will re-act differently to ulcers

My horse has just finished her third box of Gastrogard following a serious ulcer flare up.

I have used U-Gard Plus in the past and would really recommend it, definately helped her. She is now back on it.

Haven't tried Coligone as the U-Gard seems to do such a good job.

Thank you so much for that, I really trust Equine America products and have had great success with them, so U-Guard Plus here we come!! Hope your horse gets better.

My mare was initially treated with a course of gastroguard and since then has been managed on a fibre only diet which touch wood seems to be working.

Seahorse - her symptons were several bouts of spasmodic colic, general grumpiness & weight loss (she'd always been a pretty good do-er before)
