My trainer has recommended I put my boy on Succeed she has used it and swears by it, however I’m not keen on the price at nearly £80 a month:eek:, plus all his other supplements he gets it works out very expensive, Are there any similar alternatives you can recommend? He’s not been scoped for ulcers as its only in the last few weeks ive really thought about them so have been doing a trail of feeding him before I ride to see if it improves his behaviour and day 4 it seems to be working. He doesn’t have any other symptoms of ulcers except for being worked naughty/unwilling etc. He is 7, has been imported from Holland for about 2yrs (I’ve owned him for 1yr) He is out on good grazing in the day stabled with adlib haylage at night (in winter, out 24/7 in summer) I changed his feed a few months ago to A&P Ride & Relax, Fast fibre, and Dengie Hi Fi Molasses free seems much better on this diet, also gets Linseed, Calmer, Muscle Supp and glucosamine/msm. I did look at Feedmarks Ulcer calm, Global herbs, Acid X, and Equine America ulser calm.

I use feemark's Ulcer Calm, it's v good. Bear in mind that none of these supplements will cure the issue if he does have ulcers, so if you've got good insurance it would probably be worth getting him scoped and treated properly.

Thanks Spottedcat, I use Feedmark a lot and they have 3for 2 at the moment too :) I dont want to go down the insurance route of scoping etc if he hasn’t got them at the moment and then will not be covered in the future. We’ve only had him 12months and has had a few different homes in his life so not sure if its just him playing up and he does have major lack of confidence issues but he is 100 times better than he was when we first had him, but does seem better again if he gets some fibre before i ride. I know the ulcer supplements wont cure them if he does have them, but im guessing it wont hurt him either? And will allow me to monitor his performance over 2-3months if its greatly improved I will defiantly get him scoped then

It's worth cutting out the glucosamine as its affects some horses stomachs and see if the horse is better .
You dont say if the horse has had a gastro scope examination if not there is little point in self medicating ulcers as some only respond to antibiotics and gastro guard and some will settle on only gastro guard . There are many over the counter anti ulcer supplements but without a proper diagnosis and advice you are likely to wasting your money.

If he's scoped and doesn't have them, I don't think the insurance company can/is likely to exclude them! What are they excluding?! That'd be like having a horse's tendon scanned, finding nothing wrong with it because it had a foot abscess and them excluding tendon problems. I've never heard of anything being excluded because investigatory work found nothing wrong.....

I've just started my horse on Global Herbs acid-x. She's literally been on it for a day, so will let you know if there is any difference. I've not had my mare scoped, but I know she is sensitive in her stomach so thought I would try the acid-x first. She also has linseed which is good for soothing the stomach.

My horse isn't insured and I can't afford scoping at the moment unfortunately so I'm trying this so see if it helps.

Echo Above, one of my horses was diagnosed with Ulcers in 2009 we ended up usng the full 5k limit just on Gastrogard.
I keep him daily on Feedmarks Ulcer Calm, however i have used Succeed a few times. He's had a bit of a flare up just recently so he is actually on Succeed atm as well as Ulcer Calm.
His symptoms have gone away & he is back to working well, im always skeptical of Succeed but it does seem to work for small flare ups.

However i would do exactly as SC has said if insured get him scoped & treated then look at using an off the self product to maintain.

Tempi that would be great if you can keep me posted on your mare. I dont wont him going through the stress of scoping for the vet to say theres nothing there hes just being a t**t and playing up to the work, and then having to pay x amount of insurance excess. My idea behind trying a supplement was to see if he improves on it- if he does then i will talk with my vet about getting him scoped. Rather than my vet thinking im a paranoid nutty owner

please have your horse scoped if you can. I lost mine 2 weeks ago very suddenly through a gastric ulcer and mine never showed any signs of them was on good turn out not stressy.

If mine had showed any signs i would of scoped and maybe saved him x
