Firstly, this is not my horse or one I have much to do with except it's on the yard and I'm trying to be helpful (some might say nosey?) but I want to see all horses doing well and looking and feeling healthy...
Horse in question -
3 year old TB, bred to race and will prob go NH eventually. He is stabled quite a bit, does get turnout roughly 9am until 3pm daily. Good even tempered lad, nice boy, but does weave a bit in stable even with other horses in.
He basically isn't looking as good as he should, and came out of winter really poor despite lots of feeding (as per feed nutritionist). Not much weight on him, but dull, bit lack lustre. Poo is always a bit sloppy, not diarrhoea, but far wetter than it should be.
Since being out more once grass came through spring time, he is looking better, coat has come through glossier, he has more beans about him, but still too much rib on show, bit poor considering how much he gets fed/ his access to hay and grass etc (I'm not one to see fat horses as ok either!). His guts make a lot of noise! He is now being backed gently and apparently going well with a bit of light work.
Vets have been, no real diagnosis of anything. No worms, teeth all seen to, no issues and no changes to routine or drama in his life. He is now on a probiotic and this seems to help a bit, but I think he should look much better now it's summer...
Could he have gastrointestinal ulcers? Anyone had similar symptoms?
I know a vet scope would reveal, I'm surprised the vets haven't suggested to at least discount, (of course I am not a vet) but just wondering what your thoughts were. It would be nice to see him looking better.
